To see the franchise display such promising growth and evolution almost six decades later is phenomenal and deeply heartening. That’s especially so at a time when Hollywood is enduring one of its most challenging eras. The fourth installment in the franchise reboot, “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes,” takes place 300 years after the events of 2017’s “War For The Planet of the Apes.”

At the center of this story is a young chimpanzee named Noa, played by Owen Teague, forced to make a perilous journey after his village is destroyed and his family and community are either slaughtered or abducted by the army of Kevin Durand’s megalomaniacal Proximus Caesar.

So, when it was announced that director Wes Ball and 20th Century Studios were teaming up to deliver a brand-new ‘Apes’ film, the question remained—who could possibly replace Serkis as the main ape of the new chapter in the franchise?

A personal example is wanting to see Jerrod Carmichael’s “On the Count of Three,” which over a year after its premiere at Sundance 2021 has had complete radio silence in regards to a proper release. At the exact same time, film festivals are a great way to offer word of mouth and showcase up-and-coming talent on a grandiose stage.

Whose very existence serve to remind us of our own mortality. It’s fitting then that a movie about the relentlessness of time and the horror of aging would star Winona Ryder, who we’ve seen from her breakout teen years age through every phase Hollywood allows women. Co-written and directed by Eli Horowitz (“Homecoming”), the romantic horror, “The Cow,” stars Ryder as Kath, an older woman thrown for a loop when her younger boyfriend suddenly leaves her seemingly for a younger woman.

Ryder is fantastic, in her first film role since 2018’s “Destination Wedding,” bringing her trademark wry humor, expressive eyes, and fiery energy to Kath.

We meet the title character (Andrea Riseborough) via a series of photos, mostly family snapshots: happy memories, a young woman coming of age, getting married, having a baby. And then the mood shifts, to stark close-ups of bruises on her face – police evidence photos.

After their 2001 breakout indie thriller “The Deep End” the duo found creative success in family dramas such as “Bee Season” and “What Maisie Knew.” Now, after an eight-year break following “Maise,” they return with “Montana Story,” a strangely thin melodrama held together by Haley Lu Richardson’s captivating performance.
