It has been 56 years since “Planet of the Apes,” arguably one of the greatest science fiction films of all time. To see the franchise display such promising growth and evolution almost six decades later is phenomenal and deeply heartening. That’s especially so at a time when Hollywood is enduring one of its most challenging eras. The fourth installment in the franchise reboot, “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes,” takes place 300 years after the events of 2017’s “War For The Planet of the Apes.”

At the center of this story is a young chimpanzee named Noa, played by Owen Teague, forced to make a perilous journey after his village is destroyed and his family and community are either slaughtered or abducted by the army of Kevin Durand’s megalomaniacal Proximus Caesar.

With just eleven days away from release and anticipation building for “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes,” 20th Century Studios has dropped one final trailer for franchise fans to feast their eyes on before the full movie hits theaters on May 10, 2024.

Directed by “Maze Runner” filmmaker Wes Ball, the film serves as a standalone sequel to 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes,” which closed out the initial trilogy of films that began with “Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes” and was then proceeded by “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.” It’s the fourth installment in the reboot series and the tenth film overall.

2017’s “War For The Planet Of The Apes” marked the end of Matt Reeves’ “Planet Of The Apes” reboot trilogy (started by filmmaker director Rupert Wyatt). That series was originally conceived of by screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who remained exec producers on all three films, and they are back as central players in the next installment of this series, “Kingdom Of The Planet of the Apes” which takes place nearly 300 years after the events of “War For The Planet Of The Apes.”

An occasional downside to films premiering at film festivals is hearing early praise and then having to wait before even any proper release dates are made public. A personal example is wanting to see Jerrod Carmichael’s “On the Count of Three,” which over a year after its premiere at Sundance 2021 has had complete radio silence in regards to a proper release. At the exact same time, film festivals are a great way to offer word of mouth and showcase up-and-coming talent on a grandiose stage.

It’s fitting then that a movie about the relentlessness of time and the horror of aging would star Winona Ryder, who we’ve seen from her breakout teen years age through every phase Hollywood allows women. Co-written and directed by Eli Horowitz (“Homecoming”), the romantic horror, “The Cow,” stars Ryder as Kath, an older woman thrown for a loop when her younger boyfriend suddenly leaves her seemingly for a younger woman. 

Ryder is fantastic, in her first film role since 2018’s “Destination Wedding,” bringing her trademark wry humor, expressive eyes, and fiery energy to Kath.
