There is only one major question when it comes to the 2023 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series: Can anyone stop a “Ted Lasso” threepeat? Like “Veep” between 2015 and 2017, “Modern Family” between 2010 and 2014, and “30 Rock” between 2007 and 2009, the Apple TV+ phenomenon is attempting to become just the fourth series to win the category three years in a row.

Barring a last-minute deluge of contenders premiering in time, the race for a 2021 Comedy Series nomination is wide, wide open. Granted, “Ted Lasso” is the easy frontrunner to win it all, but out of the expected eight nomination slots there are only six likely nominees and even that might be a stretch. I mean, did you think “Emily in Paris” would be a Comedy Series Emmy nominee when it debuted last October?

“Veep” surprised by winning over critically acclaimed sensation “Atlanta” last year, but with the venerable HBO series taking a year off Donald Glover‘s wonder should win this time around, right?  Well, maybe.  Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is it’s own sort of sensation with 14 nominations overall in its first year.  And you can’t discount HBO’s “Barry” which also earned 12 nods in almost every major category.
