There’s an old saying at the Playlist Mansion: you do not truly know a person until you’ve asked them to chose the one film they feel was most overrated and the one they feel was most underrated in any given year. It’s not very catchy. But it is a credo with a surprising amount of wisdom in it, as well as the welcome potential for our beloved, esteemed and generally faultless contributors to make complete public fools of themselves.

While audiences griped this summer about the wealth of underwhelming sequels, this weekend, franchise entries took the top three spots at the box office. C’est la vie, and as long as moviegoers keep going to them, Hollywood will keep making them.

Certainly, in the case of “Boo! A Madea Halloween,” Tyler Perry‘s audience has not tired one bit of his comic character. While critics may scoff and hold their nose, Perry is laughing all the way to the bank.

Almost nothing worked this summer, but the most reliable genre was perhaps horror. While blockbusters left and right were flopping, low-budget chillers like “Don’t Breathe” and “Lights Out” were kicking ass, and even “The Conjuring 2” defied the trend of sequels underperforming and did blockbuster business (albeit slightly down on its predecessor).

Which should give some confidence to the makers of upcoming horror sequel/prequel thing “Ouija: Origin Of Evil.” 2014’s “Ouija,” based on the popular sleepover favorite board, wasn’t a huge blockbuster, but it did take $100 million worldwide off a $5 million budget, which must have made producers Michael Bay and Jason Blum very happy.

It might be a particularly dumb piece of material to base a movie on — the Hasbro-trademarked board with which you ‘contact the dead’ — and it might have been a very bad movie, but 2014’s horror pic ‘Ouija” was undeniably a hit, taking $100 million worldwide on a budget of just $5 million. So it’s not surprising that a sequel is now on its way. Or more accurately, a prequel.
