Happy (early) Pride Month (in two days of course)! Though we’ll all already be plenty busy dodging our exes at parades and scrubbing glitter out of our clothes, this June offers LGBTQ people everywhere a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come. This year is an especially important one, as it marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, when an uprising at a gay club in New York City galvanized gay and transgender people across the country.

We then move on to our two main reviews: new Netflix speculative sci-fi drama “The Discovery” and Neon‘s new release in theaters, “Colossal.” The back half of this episode features a grab bag of recommendations, starting with the latest from Romanian master Christian Mungiu, “Graduation,” and then moving to some streaming options in the wonderful documentary miniseries “Five Came Back” and season 2 of “Fargo.” Continuing with our Jesse Plemons theme this episode (he’s in three of the films/shows we discuss), Joe also highlights “Other People” and “Stretch & Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives.”

It’s one down and hopefully many more to come for the American Independent Film Awards. The group issued their inaugural awards over the weekend, celebrating the best films of 2016 that worked with budgets of $1 million or less.

Leading the pack with five wins was Trey Edward Shults‘ “Krisha,” as it picked up Best Film, Best Director, Best Lead Performance, Best Score, and Best Original Screenplay.

There’s too much TV, too many films, and there have been a few other things going on in 2016. So for sure, there are very few of us, even among the fraternity of full-time film commentators, who can say they’ve seen everything. Thus, here’s our annual roundup of the films we feel most likely either fell off your radar while you built your nuclear bunker, disappeared from their short runs while you attended an underground resistance meeting, or languished in your Netflix queue while you researched alternate-universe theory and the likelihood of a life-sustaining nearby planet being discovered in the next four years.

The Independent Spirit Awards has been a strange beast for most of this decade. They have often rewarded under the radar masterpieces and performances (Mya Taylor’s win in Best Supporting Female for “Tangerine” last year) but have also made head-scratching nominations in the, um, spirit of “independent spirit” (the curious case of “American”-made “The Artist”). For the most part though the committee system used to determine the nominees does much more good than bad except when it’s clear industry politics or, um, bad taste come into play.

Sundance had a couple high profile movies centering around illness this year. Netflix paid an eyebrow raising $7 million for the mostly milquetoast “The Fundamentals Of Caring,” about a teenage with muscle dystrophy and his caregiver, which features a very good supporting turn from Selena Gomez, but not much else. And then there was “Other People,” in which “Saturday Night Live” star Molly Shannon turned toward the dramatic playing a woman dealing with cancer.
