This morning AMPAS revealed the 2024 class which featured a number of 2024 Oscar winners including Lily Gladstone, Justine Triet, Cord Jefferson, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, among others. And, notably, the number of invitees jumped up to 487 after three straight years of under 400 a year.

And, of course, the “In Memoriam” is always a notable section, known for producing tears but also jeers at all the omissions that seem to occur each year.

Andrea Bocelli and Matteo Bocelli delivered this year’s Oscars In Memoriam performance singing “Time to Say Good-Bye (Con Te Partirò),” perhaps awkwardly more well-known to many these days as the song Will Ferrell and John C.

Those victories obviously came with a fleet of emotional and earnest acceptance speeches (see below). While many acceptance speeches were quick or casual, some others, like Jonathan Glazer (“Zone of Interest”) and documentary director Mstyslav Chernov of “20 Days In Mariupol” were more political, using their speeches to make stands against the wars in both Gaza and Ukraine, respectively, with a sentiment of peace behind both.

In a statement on Friday afternoon, Smith said he is resigning from the Academy and will “fully accept any and all consequences” for his conduct. The Best Actor winner for “King Richard” also apologized once again to Chris Rock and “the list of those I have hurt is long.”

Now, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are beginning their investigation. And, in what was described as a shock to the 50 members of the organization’s Board of Governors, AMPAS has revealed that Smith was asked to leave the Dolby Theater and refused.

Yesterday, fellow comedian Jim Carrey weighed in, defending Rock’s poise while calling Hollywood’s standing ovation for Smith’s Best Actor win “spineless” and “sickening.” As the controversy continues to metastasize and the Academy, SAG, and others review and consider disciplinary measures, Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, the target of Rock’s joke, has called for “healing.” However, that’s certainly not going to be the last of all the takes.

Well, the answer isn’t as clear. Despite a big bump from having the event in-person with red carpet coverage and a crowded venue packed with various stars as an extra draw, people still aren’t tuning in at the rate they used to before the pandemic and viewership had already been declining from year to year.

The decision to have the awards from eight categories (documentary short, film editing, makeup/hairstyling, original score, production design, animated short, live-action short, and sound) handed out at the beginning of the ceremony, before the event actually went live on television, was met with strong resistance from all corners of the industry.

Others might see that time spent could be reclaimed for the ceremony as producers keep looking for ways to shorten the runtime. No matter where you land, it’s hard to argue that the musical performances do add a little energy if comedic bits from the host/hosts fall flat on their faces.

Or maybe the entire week. Actually, in this decade’s extraordinarily quick news cycle, the event may be tossed aside by the general public within the next day or so, but one thing is for sure: what occurred the actors during the 94th Academy Awards telecast will not be forgotten by Academy members any time soon.

Limited by COVID restrictions — and not wanting to flash opulence in the midst of an ongoing pandemic — the Academy gave us an Oscars that felt intimate, candid, and fun. So, naturally, this year’s producers elected to create the complete opposite experience, with, uh, mixed results.
