‘Orphan: First Kill’ Contest: Win A Digital Copy Of Will Brent Bell’s Horror Prequel

The 2009 cult film “Orphan” ends with (SPOILER) Esther’s body floating in a pond after her neck is broken, so when the trailer for“Orphan: First Kill” dropped, we were surprised to tell you that this film is going to be a prequel. We were surprised because, regardless of it being 13 years later, returning to her role of orphan Esther is Isabelle Fuhrman.

This return will be made possible by a combination of make-up effects and camera tricks to make her still look believable in the role.

‘Orphan: First Kill’ Trailer: Find Out What Made Esther Evil On August 19

American writer, director, and producer William Brent Bell is a bit of an enigma if you ask us. On the one hand, he has a track record of box office hits. Conversely, those same films that grossed millions of dollars have not been well received. Bell, who has seven feature films under his belt, is probably best known for horror films such as “The Boy,” “Brahms: The Boy II,” and “The Devil Inside.”

M. Night Shyamalan has a new movie in theaters this week, “Split,” in which James McAvoy plays a man with 23 personalities who kidnaps three teenage girls. Shyamalan came to fame (and the billing of “the next Spielberg”) thanks to three big hits in a row, “The Sixth Sense,” “Unbreakable” and “Signs,” but thanks to those, he also became a byword not just for artful genre films, but also “Twilight Zone”-style shocking twist endings.

By the pricking of my thumbs, a holiday-themed list feature this way comes. Yep, All Hallow’s Eve is almost upon us, and while the temptation to do some kind of “Before I Go To Sleep“-themed feature was a great one, we thought we should put together something appropriately spooky to get you in the mood for tomorrow night’s festivities.

So, during a break from making our costumes for the annual Playlist Halloween party (popular choices this year: the Babadook, Kevin Feige, Alexander from “Alexander and The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” box-office receipts for “Sin City 2,” a GamerGater), we’ve been considering the state of recent horror.

Weekend Box Office: Kiddie And Adult Fare Rule In Atypical Summer Period

The Jerry Bruckheimer brand sure knows hits. Dipping his toes into the kiddie world, he achieved another number one hit with “G-Force.” The 3D guinea pig action picture netted $32.2 million over the weekend, outpacing last weekend’s champ “Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince.” The boy wizard fell off a sharp 61% (gee, it must be Twitter’s/MySpace’s/Skype’s fault) but was still close behind with $30 million, bringing its two week total to $222 million domestic, with undoubtedly more overseas.

In Theaters: ‘The Ugly Truth,’ ‘G-Force’ & ‘In The Loop’

Welcome to the dog days of summer, where the deafening roar of rocket turbines and rat-a-tat-tat of Tommy guns have subsided and we find ourselves in relative quiet, for now. Only the squealing of guinea pigs and Katherine Heigl risk disturbing our summer reverie. In all seriousness, mainstream cineplex choices are particularly dire this weekend, but everyone needs a break sometimes, even Hollywood.

Will this one be the lowest grossing of the summer?
