A deluge of new films has arrived after the quartet of major fall film festivals, but a TIFF 2023 debut is still one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year (based on its release date, at least). Azazel Jacob’s “His Three Daughters” currently sits with a stellar 84 on Metacritic based on 37 reviews and an impressive 97% on Rotten Tomatoes after 140 reviews. The film’s three leads, Natasha Lyonne, Carrie Coon, and Elizabeth Olsen, are all vying for a competitive Supporting Actress Oscar nomination, but their director may find himself in the Original Screenplay race.

From the creme of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival to the creme of the Academy Awards. During the 96th Oscars, Justine Triet and her partner (both writing and in life), Arthur Harari, took the Original Screenplay category for the critically acclaimed “Anatomy of a Fall.” The win caps off a remarkable 10 months which saw Triet and “Anatomy” win the prestigious Palme d’Or – only the third woman to do so – and up with an Oscar.

As Academy members begin logging into their AMPAS accounts to vote for the 95th Oscars, let us reflect on the shattered dreams of multiple contenders after “Everything Everywhere All At Once” dominated the guild honors last weekend. The Daniels‘ indie breakthrough, which already won the DGA Award earlier in the month, took the top award at the PGA Awards and won a staggering four trophies at the SAG Awards. Despite “All Quiet on the Western Front” winning the BAFTA Award the weekend prior, the Best Picture race is effectively over.

There are a number of categories where a worthy nominee won’t make the cut this Oscar season, but this Original Screenplay is worth keeping an eye on. Currently, there are at least three “likely” nominees. Martin McDonagh, who has been nominated twice previously in this category, is a pretty safe bet for “The Banshees of Inisherin,” as are Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner for the former’s autobiographical drama, “The Fabelemans.” Todd Field, who previously earned two Adapted Screenplay nominations, is also on solid ground for the critically acclaimed “TAR.” The last two spots?
