Interview: Colin Farrell and Neil Jordan Talk ‘Ondine’

Director Neil Jordan has always had one foot in the real world and one in the realm of things imagined. Films such as “The Crying Game,” “The Brave One,” and “Michael Collins” have kept him grounded, while the more fantastical elements of “The Company of Wolves,” “Interview with the Vampire,” and “In Dreams” have kept audiences guessing. We had a chance to conduct an interview with the filmmaker and his lead actor Colin Farrell to discuss his latest project, the myth-infused romance “Ondine.” We’ve found the film alternately enchanting and a little flawed, but it’s hard not to be taken in by its sweet, simple story and gorgeous (though raw-looking) cinematography from Wong Kar Wai favorite Christopher Doyle.

In Theaters: ‘Get Him to the Greek,’ ‘Splice,’ Ondine’

Kind of a low-impact weekend offering a bit of a breather between bigger tent-pole releases. It’s a mixed bag of mid-budget studio films, unusual for early June, with potential hits in “The A-Team” and “The Karate Kid” looming on next week’s horizon. Honestly we’d rather see things like “Get Him to the Greek” and “Splice” than most of what Hollywood has to offer this summer. “Shrek Forever After” will likely remain at the top of the box-office for the third week even with “Marmaduke” trying to bite off a piece of its audience.

Neil Jordan’s ‘Ondine’: An Uneven, But Enchanting Fairy Tale

We saw Neil Jordan’s “Ondine” last year at the Toronto International Film Festival and we’ll admit, we’re rather enchanted by it, despite its third act flaws and twists.

The picture centers on a recovering alcoholic fisherman (Colin Farrell, not playing his role without a sense of ironic self-awareness) who comes across a mysterious beautiful woman who may or may not be a sea nymph (gorgeous Polish actress Alicja Bachleda; Stephen Rea also stars) that ends up caught in his fishing net.

Colin Farrell Says He Said Turned Down ‘Quixote’ Six Months Ago, Is Already Out Of The Project, ‘Something Borrowed’?

Today, the Playlist scribe sat down with Neil Jordan and Colin Farrell, the director and star of the upcoming romantic mermaid fairytale film, “Ondine,” that many of us here are big fans of (more on that later, and you can read our “Ondine” review from TIFF).

Earlier this week, you’ll recall that the too-candid Robert Duvall outed Farrell as being one of the stars that turned down the lead role in Terry Gilliam’s long-gestating take deux attempt at, “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” (we all know how the first attempt went).

New ‘Ondine’ Poster, Pics & U.S. Roll-Out Schedule

Neil Jordan’s mermaid fairytale “Ondine” has sprung a leak of content today. The new poster has arrived, a few new images we haven’t seen and a U.S. roll out schedule as well. Our Editor-in-chief insists its dreamy, sumptuous and beautiful, but does sound repeatedly apologetic about it’s last act “twist” (whatever that is).

But to an outsider, this is what is has going for it: Director Neil Jordan who can be hit and miss, but has delivered some interesting works in the last few years (perhaps “Breakfast On Pluto” being the best) and Colin Farrell who starts asn Irish fisherman and recovering alcoholic who discovers a woman in his fishing net who he believes to be a mermaid (the rather gorgeous Alicja Bachleda).

Hmm, what can we saw about “Ondine” that we haven’t already said. Well for one, we were big fans of the Neil Jordan mermaid fairytale, but are honestly not loving this trailer. In fact, that’s an understatement.

What’s it about? Colin Farrell plays an Irish fisherman and recovering alcoholic who discovers a woman in his fishing net who he believes to be a mermaid (Alicja Bachleda; the mother of his 2nd child no less, and yes, they met on set).

‘Scott Pilgrim’ Gets August 13 Release Date; ‘The Adjustment Bureau’ Hits July 30

We’ve obviously known for several weeks now that Edgar Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” would be hitting theaters in August and now we have a confirmed date. The picture, called a cross between, “The Matrix,” “Freaks & Geeks” “Kill Bill” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (talk about lofty comparisons with a lot to live up to) now is set for an August 13 release according to Box-Office Mojo.

Don’t fret about August being dumping-ground season.

Yes, the obsessive comprehensive look at films from 2010 continues, but this time it’s slightly different. Alright, we don’t anticipate these films, because, well, we’ve already seen them. But you probably do. Here’s 30 films we’ve already seen and that are probably fairly high on your most anticipated 2010 list if you’re a film festival goer and a cineaste. However, not all of them turned out as great as we had hoped. Buyer beware with some.

Magnolia To Release Neil Jordan’s ‘Ondine’

Here’s what we consider some good news.

Acquisitions might have been slow at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, but one of our personal favorites (or at least this writer’s personal favorites, Neil Jordan’s Irish sea-nymph fantasy picture, “Ondine,” starring Colin Farrell is finally getting U.S. distribution.

Movieline has learned that Magnolia Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to the picture, which we admitted in our TIFF review was not perfect — the twist, thriller-like ending could be a dealbreaker for some — but it was enchanting and romantically evocative enough to be a very sweet and memorable fairytale that we look back on very fondly.

Neil Jordan’s ‘Ondine’ Is An Enchanting Fairytale With Another Terrific Comeback Performance For Colin Farrell [TIFF Review]

Beginning with a simple story about a fisherman (Colin Farrell) who comes across a mysterious beautiful woman who may or may not be a sea nymph (fetching Polish actress Alicja Bachleda), Neil Jordan‘s “Ondine,” doesn’t hide the fact that it’s essentially an full-blown fairytale.

Besides that basic info and the fact that Sigur Rós‘ keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson was composing the score, we didn’t know much else, but as we’ve said countless times, there’s something to be said about going into a movie mostly blind.

Sigur Rós’ ‘All Alright’ Plays Central Role In Neil Jordan’s ‘Ondine’

Ok, so we already reported months ago that Sigur Rós’ keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson was hired to compose the score to Neil Jordan’s sea-nymph fairytale picture, “Ondine,” starring Colin Farrell and comely Polish actress Alicja Bachleda.

We saw the film the other night and the magical picture was one of our favorites of the festival so far (even if it’s not entirely 100% problem free; a full review hopefully soon). The score by Sveinsson was as typically, ethereal, elegiac and beautiful as you’d probably expect.

TIFF ’09: Day Two

A bit more sleep and a shower (finally) makes it all go down somewhateasier, but the on-the-run food and increasing carpal tunnel syndrome issues don’t help. Also, obey the cardinal rule: avoid other festival-going friends: you will talk and drink and be merry and hours and hours of precious writing time is gone, never to be recovered.

But Day 2 was certainly the best so far with two decidedly great pictures. The first was The Weinstein Company’s scooped up festival buzzer, Tom Ford’s exquisite “A Single Man,” which is as terrific as they say it is.

Recession Leaves TIFF Films Up For Grabs? Not So Fast…

With the Toronto Int. Film Festival just a couple of weeks away, the stars, publicists, journalists, critics and bloggers are getting hotels, meetings and film screenings into place. That said, writers still need something to do until the actual screenings start, so why not a purely speculative piece on how the recession is keeping buyers away from some of the most anticipated films at TIFF?

In a report by Guy Dixon at Canada’s The Globe & Mail, he points out that about a hundred films, including Werner Herzog’s “Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans”; Atom Egoyan’s “Chloe” and Neil Jordan’s “Ondine” will be screening without distribution deals in place (at least not officially).

Sigur Rós’ Kjartan Sveinsson Scoring Neil Jordan’s Magical ‘Ondine’

We haven’t reported much, or at all on Neil Jordan’s “Ondine,” because it was off our radar, frankly (so many movies, so little time).

Well, now it’s officially on our scopes and apologies to Jordan for being so late to the party.

The intriguing entry point to the conversation for us is the fact that Sigur Rós’ ethereal keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson is composing the score, a few of the group’s songs will also be featured in the picture.
