While he’s known for the boundary-pushing NBC sitcom, “The Carmichael Show,” and ruthlessly honest comedy stand-up specials—including the “Rothaniel” 2022 HBO special where he came out of the closet for the first time—comedian/actor Jerrod Carmichael is also carving out what appears to be a promising career as a filmmaker. His feature-length dramatic debut, “On The Count Of Three,” debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2021, was released theatrically this summer in May via United Artists Releasing, and now the indie is available on Hulu.

With an incredibly eclectic lineup this month, May certainly isn’t slowing down in premiering intriguing and must-see pictures. Even the tentpole Marvel film directed by Sam Raimi looks to possess more thrills than the standard Marvel lineup. From Sundance standouts to music documentaries, and two cinematic spin-offs from fan-favorite shows, this month comes armed with choices for everyone. While we’re seeing the familiar pacing of the early summer blockbuster season, there are plenty of independent and under-recognized titles worth seeking out. 

As we continue to see mostly theatrical releases return to the pre-Covid “norm,” it’s interesting to see which films will also be having their streaming debut.

Two men, one white and one black, point guns at each other in a 10 am standoff outside of a strip club. To viewers, it might come as a surprise, but the pair are childhood best friends. Instead of memories, now, a suicide-pact binds them together. Jerrod Carmichael’s feature directorial debut “On the Count of Three,” for which he stars, is a dark buddy comedy that struggles to cover its weighty topics—mental health and political correctness—due to the unassured hand of its creator.

The fact there are even 72 selections for the 2020 Sundance Film Festival is something of a miracle. The fall festivals had the benefit of movies that mostly shot before the pandemic hit in March. Outside of three selections originally set to debut at Cannes (a silver lining for Sundance), most of the narrative pictures premiering in January were shot at least partially after the virus hit North America. When there is a will, there is a way.
