South Korean filmmaker Hong Sangsoo works at a clip that might leave you breathless. This year alone he’s completed three pictures — all of which have hit the festival circuit — and now they’re making their way to an arthouse near you. As per usual, they’re all worth tracking down, and you’ll want to make space this season for “On The Beach At Night Alone.”

Featuring a terrific, award-winning performance by Kim Minhee, the story is loosely inspired by the director’s own affair with the actress, and the result is a film we called both “exceptional” and “exciting.” Here’s the official synopsis:

While other festival organizers have worried about their relationship to Netflix and Amazon, and what it means to the future of cinema, the New York Film Festival has no such qualms. Organizers have revealed the bulk of their slate, and the films — with more than a few from those streaming services — that will join Opening Night flick “Last Flag Flying” from Richard Linklater, Closing Night picture “Wonder Wheel” from Woody Allen,” and Centerpiece Gala selection “Wonderstruck” from Todd Haynes.

Another year, and another Berlin Film Festival has wrapped up. It was bit quieter on the ground in 2017 than past years, but as always, a handful of movies shined brightly and are flying home from the prestigious festival with some serious hardware to put on the shelf.

With the best will in the world, we can’t pretend that the 2017 Berlin Film Festival lineup has that many major buzz titles in comparison to previous years. But it pays to remember that the Berlinale is a peculiar festival in that even when it has a high-profile, established-auteur-laden programme, it’s inevitably not those movies that really punch hardest in the end (we’re looking at you, Terrence Malick, Werner Herzog, Wim Wenders and more, all of whom debuted disappointing work at the festival in recent years).

To be honest, thus far the lineup for the 2017 Berlin International Film Festival has been kind of… quiet. Unlike starry opening films of the past few years, things kick off in February with “Django,” a biopic about the great jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. And pictures we might’ve expected in Berlin like Terrence Malick‘s “Song To Song” have opted to landed elsewhere instead (that movie will launching SXSW).
