What you hear is the deep sigh of frustration of Marvel fans everywhere as the realization of a year wait until the next ‘Avengers‘ installment sets in. Although the next tentpole Marvel film, “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” doesn’t hit theaters until later this summer, there’s plenty of blockbuster fare to strike a similar exciting chord revving up in May, along with plenty of films that filter in through different niches of independent filmmaking.

It seems that the range and limits of Saoirse Ronan’s talents know no bounds. She has played just about every type of character from a mysterious vampire in “Byzantium,” to the perfect assassin in “Hanna,” to an American teenager ready to take on the world in Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” and now a timid and sexually repressed newlywed in the upcoming “On Chesil Beach.” Here’s the official synopsis:

If you were to explain the act of human intercourse to someone to whom the idea was completely foreign, it might sound particularly freakish. While we have our eyeballs full with Venice, TIFF, NYFF, and Telluride (which kicks off this weekend), The BFI London Film Festival is no slouch at bringing the business. While they’re less concerned with World Premieres as their counterparts, each year their lineup represents the cream of the festival crop, and 2017 is no different.

Among the highlights in the first wave of programming is Lynne Ramsay‘s “You Were Never Really Here,” which notably isn’t screening at “the big three” North American festivals.

The Toronto International Film Festival has revealed the rest of their main slate this morning, and they are not messing around this year. Organizers have an extraordinary lineup on their hands, and they scored some big surprises we didn’t see coming.

Leading the pack is “I Love You, Daddy” a new film by Louis C.K. that quietly shot this summer, and was turned around in time for the fest.
