Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, right? There’s something brilliant about casting Jenna Coleman in the upcoming revenge thriller series “Wilderness.” Petite, much much younger than she looks (37!, but going on 19), and known for “Doctor Who,” “Queen Victoria,” and “Victoria,” she seems something of an innocent nice girl. However, that stereotype is thrown on its head in the upcoming series, “Wilderness.”

Amnesia plots are a television staple often derided as a convenient method of slowing down or speeding up a story. Soap operas have used this device for decades, and memory loss can be hard to deploy without tipping into ridiculous territory. Luckily, “Surface” doesn’t stretch credibility too far in its premise, and the central performances bolster this framing. Some leaps (pun not intended) are made, but the twisty thriller is an entertaining exploration of identity.

With “The Lost Daughter,” director Maggie Gyllenhaal wears melancholy like a second skin. One of her generation’s most underrated actors, she moves through her films with a flicker of otherworldly woe; an organic ability that has routinely been informing the highlights of her filmography to date, from the erotically manic “Secretary” to the gritty “Sherrybaby,” and more recently, the wistful thriller, “The Kindergarten Teacher.” In other words, Gyllenhaal has always possessed an auteurial sway over the films she was in, putting on them her signature ethereal stamp.

In many modern horror movies, things are aggressively didactic. Baddies are bad, heroes are good; audiences – in their perceived inability to assign morality or allegiance to a story on their own – are dumb. This formula can be useful when employed well (as in “Get Out”), but most great horror films teeter on the balance beam of nuance. Enter Leigh Whannell’s “The Invisible Man,” a film whose smarter points, like its antagonist, ultimately blink in and out of existence before standing, dark and disappointing, and clocking you over the head.

Sorry, Johnny Depp fans, but it’s official. For real, this time. Depp will not be portraying the lead in “The Invisible Man.” Despite the high-profile announcement a few years back, the Dark Universe is dead and Blumhouse is taking “The Invisible Man” and doing its own spin. And according to Deadline, the production company has found its lead.

Blumhouse has reportedly signed Oliver Jackson-Cohen to star as the title character in the reimagining of “The Invisible Man.” We don’t know the exact nature of the plot, but if you’ve seen the various versions of the character, you have a good idea of what to expect.
