The Costume Designer Guild became the second to last guild to announce their year-end awards on Thursday (the VFX society is the straggler) and peppered in some unexpectedly fun players amongst the expected nominees.  Awards season contenders such as “A Star is Born,” “Black Panther,” “The Favourite” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” were joined by “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Ocean’s 8,” “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” “A Wrinkle in Time” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”  Surprise omissions included “A Simple Favor,” “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” “Roma” and “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.”

“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” roared to a gargantuan $150 million debut this weekend. While that’s 28% down from the 2015’s massive $208.8M opening, it’s ultimately a small drop, plus that was the first ‘Jurassic’ film in nearly 15 years and nostalgia and anticipation for the film, much like the first “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was at a fever pitch. Nothing really outperforms the opening installment of a beloved franchise that’s returning decades later and ‘Fallen Kingdom’ held audiences fascination much more than many had expected.

Wow, “Incredibles 2” sure did have an incredible weekend, huh? (Yeah, had to do it, sue me.)

Coming into the weekend, everyone assumed that “Incredibles 2” would have a massive opening. The stars have truly aligned for the animated film. The film has had a ton of hype and buzz leading to its opening, with a truly impressive 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, showing that the franchise hasn’t missed a beat in 14 years between films.

“Ocean’s 8” currently sits at a 68% on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s enough for a “fresh” rating, but perhaps not as high as the studio or the stars of the film had hoped for. Well, if you talk to a couple of the actresses involved in the female-led heist film, they have an idea why that might be – a lack of diversity among the film critics.

The issue of white men dominating film criticism is a bit of a hot-button issue over the last week or so.

There was never a curse against all-female led franchises; it’s just that, one of the first ones in our modern era, “Ghostbusters,” was rather awful and audiences rejected it (and yes, a subspecies of morons also retaliated against it hard). Thankfully, since man babies feel no special attachment to the “Ocean’s” films, and the Gary Ross-picture is pretty good, the new “Ocean‘s 8” film starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway and more, did superb business at the box office this weekend.

Without the magnifying lens of a jeweler’s loupe, “Ocean’s 8” could almost fool the untrained eye that it’s the work of franchise filmmaker Steven Soderbergh. The director of the first three “Ocean’s” films is listed here as a producer, but Gary Ross takes over the duties and it’s a switch that might fool casual fans. Here the “Seabiscuit” and “Hunger Games” helmer ably apes Soderbergh’s stylish shooting, editing and approach to musical cues, but it sometimes feels like the cubic zirconium version of the real thing, as it mimics each facet of its predecessors.
