In true magician fashion, Lionsgate has pulled a third “Now You See Me” film out of a hat. And this time, the film has a new creative mind leading the way.

According to Lionsgate, writer Eric Warren Singer has been hired to pen the script for the third “Now You See Me” film. The plot for the film isn’t known at this time, but the two previous movies followed the story of a group of magicians that used their abilities to perform magical heists and illusions to avoid the law.

WORST. SUMMER. EVER. By now you’ve  heard that refrain applied to the 2016 blockbuster season. Normally, we’re highly skeptical of any claims that suggest that the times we’re living in right this second are somehow unprecedented. The idea that Nothing Like This Has Ever Happened Before almost always proves false in the longer term, because the wheel turns, old wounds heal and new much more painful ones are opened up. You gotta sort of admire the cojones of Lionsgate brass. 2013’s “Now You See Me” was fluke hit, a movie that managed to sleep its way to $351 worldwide (most of it internationally), and while no one particularly liked it, the studio figured there was enough juice there for a sequel. While none of the sequels this weekend saw as dire a drop off as “Alice Through The Looking Glass” when compared to their originals, Hollywood still hasn’t escaped this year’s growing concern with lackluster follow-ups, while their franchise problem continues to persist (at least domestically). Basically, studios don’t make sequels for them to earn the same as or less than their predecessors, and this weekend’s results for two major follow-ups won’t have executives pouring out the champagne.

Right now, the reaction to “Now You See Me 2” can be summed up in one word: really? No one really loved the first movie, and certainly there was no sustained cry for a sequel, but Lionsgate have faith they can take the modest success of “Now You See Me” and turn it into a franchise. And so, here we are, and we’ll soon see if the studio’s gamble paid off.

Obviously the biggest event of the summer is The Playlist moving to the shiny new digs in which you’re now seeing us. But seriously, the summer movie months are packed with films both big and small guaranteed to thrill, delight and provoke you, and keep you out of the sunshine, and inside basking in air-conditioned comfort.

The time when big movies were released only in summer has long gone — this year has seen “Deadpool,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” and “The Jungle Book” among those that were smashing box office records while the temperatures were still low and the days still short.
