Yari Group Files For Bankruptcy Which Could Fatally Wound ‘What Doesn’t Kill You’ And ‘Nothing But The Truth’

Producer Bob Yari has been forced to place the releasing division of his company, the Yari Film Group, in chapter 11 bankruptcy as they began to feel the squeeze of the tightening credit markets.

This recent development is surely going to negatively impact the two films the company is currently releasing, as it is being forced to suspend all its releasing activities.

The films at risk consist of the Brian Goodman directed crime drama “What Doesn’t Kill You” (Mark Ruffalo, Ethan Hawke) and the Rod Lurie’s “Nothing but the Truth,” which stars Vera Farmiga and Kate Beckinsale.

Yari Group Film Posters, ‘Truth’ And ‘Kill’ Make Both Movies Look Better Than They Are

There’s nothing inherently super wrong with Rod Lurie’s “Nothing But The Truth” and Brian Goodman’s “What Doesn’t Kill You,” they’re decent to OK dramas with some great notes, some tired cliches and some excellent performances.

Both these posters from the Yari Film group are kind of great, but both of them make ’em look much stronger than they are.

Vera Farmiga and Kate Beckinsale are formidable in ‘Truth,’ especially the latter, but an Oscar nomination seems out of reach only because the film is so under-the-radar (Alan Alda and Matt Dillon display some pretty admirable turns as well).

We showed you scenes from Rod Lurie’s “Nothing But The Truth” earlier this month, now here’s the trailer. The film is loosely based on the Valerie Plame story and uses that CIA/Journalism-gate as a launching pad to explore injustice, governmental First Amendment abuses, and journalistic ethics.

The synopsis: “Nothing But The Truth” is the story of Rachel Armstrong (Kate Beckinsale), a young reporter on the national desk of the Capitol Sun-Times, a major Washington, D.C.

Fans of Kate Beckinsale, Vera Farmiga, and or Matt Dillon and Alan Alda, should take note. There’s a ton of scenes from Rod Lurie’s upcoming political journalism/injustice drama, “Nothing But The Truth,” online.

“Nothing But The Truth,” uses the Valerie Plame case – the now-famous CIA covert agent who was outed by the Washington Times. New York Times journalist Judith Miller had nothing to do with that story, but evidently was in possession of relevant evidence, but was subsequently jailed for contempt of court for refusing to testify before a federal grand jury.

EW has a scene from Clint Eastwood’s “Changeling,” starring Angelina Jolie. The L.A. Times has many new photos. [EW/The Envelope]

“Nothing But The Truth,” The Rod Lurie-directed Valerie Plame-like justice drama starring Kate Beckinsale and Vera Farmiga now has a release date of December 19. We saw the film at the Toronto Film Festival and we liked it, but we didn’t love it. Still, Beckinsale does have a strong shot at an Oscar nod as the classic-drama mode of this film will appeal to Oscar voters.

TIFF Review: ‘Nothing But The Truth’ Channels The Valerie Plame Story

While the Toronto International Film Festival begins to wind down we ask ourselves, we find ourselves asking a lot, “why did we go see this movie?” Not because it’s crap, we bought most of our tickets in advance, but we did buy lots of them without knowing much about the films. Rod Lurie’s “Nothing But The Truth,” was certainly one of those films. We saw it for three reasons, one bold face names like Kate Beckinsale and Vera Farmiga are what most fare weather movie fans want to read about (celebrities), both are admittedly rather gorgeous and there was a tiny bit of blog chatter about it, probably coming from someone like Jeffrey Wells (neither a dig or a laud, just an observation).
