It’s been eight years since U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) packed up his Stetson hat and moved down to Miami in the series finale of FX’s consistently excellent “Justified.” (Although it’s 15 years in the world of the show.) As if he’s never left, he glides back into the television landscape this month with “Justified: City Primeval,” an eight-episode limited series that adapts Elmore Leonard’s 1980 book, “City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit,” into a new standalone story.

Here’s something most people don’t know about me, unless they’ve ever sung karaoke with me or asked me what my major hobbies were from age 15-20 — I am a massive theatre nerd. How much more story is there to tell about the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III? Ridley Scott recounted the tale in his somewhat truth bending thriller “All The Money In The World,” but Danny Boyle and his regular collaborator Simon Beaufoy believe they can get a whole season out of the bizarre, ear slicing incident. And frankly, we’re willing to gamble that it’ll be well worth the watch.

“Bloodline” could have been one of Netflix’s greatest shows. It came from the creators of the always-enjoyable “Damages,” had some killer production value, and an absolutely stellar cast featuring Kyle Chandler, Ben Mendelsohn, Sissy Spacek, Sam Shephard, Linda Cardellini, Norbert Leo Butz and, more recently, John Leguizamo, Andrea Riseborough, Chloe Sevigny, Beau Bridges, and more.

And yet it never quite worked as well as it should have done: the first season was moderately gripping and had some great acting (specifically from Mendelsohn), but felt like a movie plot that had become bloated to thirteen hours, and Season 2 doubled down on the problem, feeling like an epilogue, particularly as it had killed off most of the best characters.
