An unconventional mode of transportation should do the trick. That’s the best thing about “Black Crab,” Netflix‘s latest entry in its long line of dystopia-adjacent projects. But hasn’t this been done before, one may ask, and at a high level? Certainly, but director/co-writer Adam Berg has no plans to swipe from the likes of Bong Joon-ho‘s 2013 extravaganza “Snowpiercer” and its globe-spanning locomotive for his feature debut.

Often, for film fans, this can mean a film is trying too hard to be something more than just a typical gorefest. But sometimes, the term is earned with projects such as “Hereditary” or “The Witch.” Judging by the early reviews for “You Won’t Be Alone,” Goran Stolevski’s feature definitely earns the title.

In the opening of Goran Stolevski’s gruesome fairytale horror story, “You Won’t Be Alone,” Old Maid Maria (Anamaria Marinca), a menacing body of scar tissue and wispy gray hair, comes upon baby Nevena. To spare the child’s life, her anguished mother makes a vow to Maria: If she allows Nevena to live, when the girl turns 16, she can have her as a surrogate daughter.

And it’s safe to say that “You Won’t Be Alone” is shaping up to be one of those films.

READ MORE: 22 Most Anticipated Sundance 2022 Films: ‘Cha Cha Real Smooth,’ ‘Fire of Love,’ ‘FRESH’

Again, judging just based on the trailer, “You Won’t Be Alone” looks to be a beautiful, stylish period thriller that feels very much in the realm as something like Robert Eggers’ “The Witch.” Except in this film, the witch in question isn’t being seduced by evil but instead is dreaming of being more human.

A layered text that unpacks itself like a Russian nesting doll of human folly, the film showcases minimalist subtlety that deploys its pieces with exacting precision. Intriguing, suspenseful, occasionally hilarious, and perpetually engaging, “Lamb” exists in a space unencumbered by genre and unconcerned with expectation.

Early reviews and the trailer have been coy about how much they reveal of the plot, and for good reason: the journey of discovery is half the fun of the picture. It follows a middle-aged Icelandic couple who discover a lamb-human hybrid on their farm, using this as a platform to extend the narrative’s tendrils around concepts of grief, salvation, and humanity’s place in the natural world.

One thing’s for sure; it looks cold and chilly based on previous teasers.

Playing in the Un Certain Regard section of this year’s Festival de Cannes, the film centers on a couple living on a remote sheep farm, where they one day discover an unusual newborn that they immediately decide to raise as their own.

It’s German for “Blood and Honor.” Not only that, but the phrase was also utilized as a reprehensible rallying cry for Nazi Germany during World War II and the years before. It was their baseless justification for committal of appalling crimes against humanity. Cinema has—however—provided some microscopic but—nonetheless—cathartic examples of such individuals getting their due comeuppance. Take “The Debt,” “The Odessa File,” “This Must Be The Place,” some scenes in “X-Men: First Class” or all of Amazon’s Nazi-hunting show, “Hunters.” A new movie entitled “The Secrets We Keep” sees another Holocaust survivor granted the opportunity to make the red stuff flow out of the person who tortured her years ago.

Normally, low-budget horror sequels are on an annual release schedule. However, before the director could get back to work on that film, he had to finish up starring in the upcoming Season 2 of his Amazon spy series, “Jack Ryan.”

And as seen in the new trailer for the upcoming episodes of “Jack Ryan,” Krasinski surely has had his plate full over the last year.

Most of the time, when you imagine such a scenario, it’s some weirdo in an unmarked van that preys on children, offering candy and whatnot. But in the case of the film “Angel of Mine,” the predator in question is a mentally ill woman going through an extreme case of PTSD.

As seen in the trailer, the person that is threatening to kidnap a little girl isn’t some creepy guy in a van, but instead, a grieving mother that is utterly convinced that her neighbor’s daughter is, in fact, her own.

Then, a man murmurs a noise, husky and low, that indicates he doesn’t know.

“Stockholm syndrome,” the woman replies, as the face of Bianca Lind (Noomi Rapace) fades into view. Red-tinted, 70s-era glasses hang on the bridge of her nose as a pensive smile hangs on her lips.

In fact, people know the term so well and can probably give you the definition, but actually, don’t know exactly where the phrase originated from. Well, Ethan Hawke and Noomi Rapace attempt to educate film fans about the issue in the upcoming bonkers, but true, crime story, “Stockholm.”

In the first trailer for the film, we see that “Stockholm” is based on the true story of a 1973 bank robbery in Stockholm, Sweden that would lead to a psychological expert to coin the phrase “Stockholm Syndrome” as the hostages began to show sympathy for their captors.

But this is Netflix – which is pretty legit most of the time – and instead of Seagal and his ponytail, we get Noomi Rapace and her bun. “Close” is better than late-period Seagal from every angle, but it’s still a largely forgettable action movie that will likely get lost in the sea of original titles added to Netflix each month and will fade from memory if you do stumble upon it and press play.

And sometimes you just want to watch a film that features lots of things blowing up and bullets flying around. If you’re interested in that second scenario, Netflix is starting 2019 off with a bang thanks to its upcoming original film “Close.”

As seen in the first trailer for the film, Noomi Rapace stars as the best damn bodyguard in the world, who is assigned a brand-new client – a rich heiress that is definitely someone you’d probably seen hocking herbal, diet teas on Instagram.
