In Theaters: ‘Kick-Ass,’ ‘Death at a Funeral,’ ‘Exit Through the Gift Shop’

Two new films opening wide this week, both with R ratings, but aimed at wildly different audiences. With a modest budget of 28 million, “Kick-Ass” should find the road to profitability to be relatively free and easy and hopefully pave the way for similar films with indie ideals aimed at the blockbuster crowd. The R-rating could keep some of the target audience away, but if the word-of-mouth is strong enough, kids will find a way to see it.

‘No One Knows About Persian Cats’: Review, Soundtrack Details & Release Dates For This Moving & Passionate Film

The acclaimed new film “No One Knows About Persian Cats” by Bahman Ghobadi (“Turtles Can Fly,” “A Time for Drunken Horses”) slowly leaks out through the U.S. starting this weekend. The film won the Special Jury Prize and Un Certain Regard at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, not to mention an award from the Miami International Film Festival, Sao Paulo International Film Festival, Tokyo Filmex, and three awards at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.

‘American Pie’ Headed Back To The Big Screen; Joss Whedon and Morgan Spurlock Prep Comic Con Doc & Carla Gugino Joins ‘Faster’

Universal is looking to bring “American Pie” back to the big screen. The studio currently has “American Pie 4” in development have been hired Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (“Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle”) to write the script. No word yet if this will try and bring back the original cast members (doubtful) or start anew (more likely) but we imagine it will only be marginally better than the string of straight-to-DVD sequels that the studio has endlessly churned out.

FNC ’09 Roundup: ‘Precious,’ ‘No One Knows About Persian Cats,’ ‘Taqwacore’ And More

We’ve hit the midway point of the Festival du Nouveau Cinema and our backs are beginning to feel the pain from unforgiving cinema seating. But that’s a minor complaint as its all about the films and we can think of worse ways to spend weekend afternoons than soaking up movies. Here’s quick round-up of some of the films we’ve seen so far:

“Precious” – If you had told us a year ago that a kitchen sink drama produced by Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey was going to garner serious Oscar considerations we would’ve asked you to puff, puff, pass and stop bogarting that shit.

More Cannes Sales & Awards; ‘Parnassus’ Deal Expected Soon?

Sigh, Cannes 2009. So many films so little time. Another film we came this — close to seeing was a picture called, “Dogtooth,” that sounded incredibly interesting. It’s basically about three siblings completely sheltered and cut-off from the outside world and forced to play games according to rules created by their overprotective parents. It’s by Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and it won the top Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes. Corneliu Porumboiu’s “Police, Adjective” won the jury prize and Bahman Ghobadi’s docu-fiction portrait of the underground music scene in Iran, “No One Knows About The Persian Cats” took a special prize.
