It’s time to get to the next level. Nintendo has officially announced that a second “Super Mario Bros. Movie” from animation studio Illumination (co-financed and distributed by Universal Pictures) is already set for a release date of April 3, 2026. The video game company made that news about a follow-up to the billion-dollar hit public in a post made on social media over the weekend (see below).

Oddly enough, when “The Super Mario Bros. In fact, perhaps the biggest comment from fans of Nintendo was about the possibility of a live-action version of “The Legend of Zelda.” Well, it appears fans will be getting exactly what they wished for.

After “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” made over $1.3 billion at the global box office, it’s safe to say that Illumination is pretty pleased with its partnership with Nintendo. The new film now ranks as Illumination’s highest-grossing film, surging past 2015’s “Minions” at $1.159 billion to top that list. So will the computer animation studio embark on another project with Nintendo soon, like a rumored “The Legend Of Zelda” movie?

Only 30% of gamers are under the age of 18, according to market research. A Nintendo-commissioned survey found that the same demographic represented only 17% of the highest-intent buyers for their Switch console. These data points may be entirely out of mind for anyone watching “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” Yet they were almost assuredly top of mind for the team making the film.

Since the financial success of projects like “Detective Pikachu” (2019) and “Sonic the Hedgehog” (2020) shattered the glass ceiling, various studios have greenlit plans for movies and TV shows based on Dungeons & Dragons, MegaMan, Pac-Man, and more.

Perhaps the most anticipated is the upcoming “Super Mario Bros” movie, the first attempt to capture Nintendo’s trademark franchise on the big screen since 1993’s ill-fated adaptation became one of Hollywood’s most infamous bombs (or “bob-ombs,” if you prefer).
