The director’s visually stunning, melancholy, and hilarious adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray‘s novel is almost staggering in its technical precision, and it’s matched by Kubrick’s exacting vision. However, the director tried a couple different avenues before landing on how he would present the tale of the titular character, with different ideas for the score and narration considered through the editing process.

A lot of y’all have been asking about “Paranoid Park” and whether the lyrical and dreamy skate drama by director Gus Van Sant was going to have an accompanying soundtrack release or not.

As we mentioned way back in the day, an album was released in France in October 2007. This same album is now available as an import on Amazon and more accesibly to most, the soundtrack has also now been made available on Itunes which features most of the key songs used in the film (the entire list of songs here).

We saw this one many moons ago, but for the rest of the world, Gus Van Sant’s dreamy skate-punk teen angst film, “Paranoid Park” hits real-world theaters on March 7, via IFC films. As we previously reported, the film features music by Elliott Smith, Menomena and recycled Nino Rota classic score material.

Our belated New York Film Festival review, plus a rundown of all the music used in the film.

Gus Van Sant has been fixated on a minimalist, experimental type of filmmaking since the beginning of this decade (“Gerry,” “Elephant” and “Last Days” comprise what people call his “death trilogy”) and his approach with his latest effort, “Paranoid Park,” is much the same including his penchant for chronological puzzles/time displacement and his fondness for experimental, musique concrète and abstract music (A special 60th anniversary prize went to Van Sant’s film at Cannes this year)

About a teenage skater kid that accidentally kills a security guard and tries to keep it secret, as the London Telegraph perfectly puts it, “few American directors rival Gus Van Sant’s ability to create lush, beautifully lensed and strangely enigmatic odes to the vulnerability of teenage boys,” and this nails it.
