As usual, the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) are always the most key augur of to the way Oscar eventually turns in the acting categories. No we won’t be live blogging it. But we’re here, so we’ll probably add the winners as they happen.

For the movie categories that is, we’re not going to bother with all the TV awards. Of course there’s only five categories for movies which makes this easy for us.

Weekend Box Office: Technology Beats ‘Book of Eli’ With ‘Avatar’ On Top

It’s the age of the Kindle, people. How else to explain Denzel Washington‘s plea for literacy, “Book of Eli,” failing to unseat the “Avatar!” juggernaut? Like “Sherlock Holmes” before it, “Book” won the Friday matchup with James Cameron‘s 3D Blue Native American epic, but IMAX prices goosed the film to an eventual weekend win, and a surely robust total after the four day Martin Luther King weekend.

Weekend Box Office: ‘Avatar’ Joins The Billion Dollar Club

Three weekends of at least $68 million. This is getting ridiculous, America. We know it’s cold and dreary outside, and you probably want to stay away from your families for the holidays. But, we dunno, isn’t there something better to do with your time? “Avatar” is a good bit of fun, for sure, but does this film really merit these ridiculous grosses? At $350 million domestic, part of a billion dollar worldwide take (Jesus, man!), “Avatar” is unquestionably the people’s choice.

Weekend Box Office: ‘Sherlock’ Fails To Solve The Mystery Appeal Of ‘Avatar’

So… “Avatar.” You like it, you really really like it. After a solid opening weekend in 3D box office terms, the film dropped only 2.6% from last period’s intake, winning with a superspectacular $75 million, the best second weekend in history, and a ten day total of $212 mil. Hooray for megabudgeted anti-corporation big blockbusters made by big corporations! “Avatar” has connected big time, and with more holidays off and word of mouth spreading (“I don’t remember what it was about but… blue things!”), it’s got a shot at $300 million by next weekend and at least a $400 domestic take.

Anthony Minghella Rewrote And Changed The Ending Of ‘Nine’

Yesterday morning, this writer braved frigid temperatures to make a press screening of
“Nine,” only to come out of it wondering why we bothered leaving the house in the first place. We liked the film even less than the EIC, but, if two hours spent with a self-loathing womanizer with low self-esteem seems like a fun time to you, who knows, you might like it.

In Theaters: ‘Avatar,’ ‘Crazy Heart,’ ‘Nine’

Pretending this weekend is going to be ruled by anything but James Cameron and his bright blue animated walking talking cat-creatures is silly. The buzz has started to roar so loud on this one, it will be interesting to see if it can sustain itself throughout the film couple months of the new year as “Titanic” did all those years ago. The only other wide release, “Did You Hear About the Morgans” may have a tough time convincing people to not just go see “The Blind Side” again.

‘Up In The Air,’ ‘Basterds’ & ‘Precious’ Lead The SAG Nominees

The SAG (Screen Actors Guild) nominees are always the most key bellweather of Oscar when it comes to the acting awards and much to no one’s surprise they’re pretty similar to the Golden Globe nominations (though more “Hurt Locker” this time). Jason Reitman’s “Up In the Air,” Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds,” and Lee Daniels’ “Precious” lead the pack each taking three nominations. More analysis shortly, but we’re pleased here for the most part (though bummed “Bright Star” was totally shut-out; we presume this means game over for the Jane Campion film at the Oscars which is a shame).

‘Up In The Air’ & ‘Nine’ Lead The 2009 Golden Globe Nominees

Is it just us, or does the awards season get so predictable ever year, you basically lose interest? The Golden Globes just announced their nominations this morning and unless you’re “Precious” or the kid from “The Blind Side,” you’ll notice they are almost exactly the same as the BFCA’s nominations announced yesterday.

Most of the categories have at least 4 if not all 5 of the films the Critic’s noms included, and if we were to bet, we’d say the Oscar noms won’t be much different.

‘Nine’ & ‘Inglourious Basterds’ Lead The Broadcast Film Critic Award Nominees

If the Golden Globes are the poor man’s Oscars, then the Broadcast Film Critic Awards are the poor man’s Golden Globes. Nevertheless, it will be the first televised film awards show of the season (airing around the first week of January), and features all of the same categories as the Oscars, expanded this year to include all the technical categories such as editing, cinematography, visual effects, etc. Also, these awards can be a surprisingly good predictor of what the Oscars might bring.

Review: ‘Nine’ Is All Razzle, Dazzle & Not Much Else

While as stylish, technically proficient and lovely looking as you might imagine, the alchemical ingredient equaling some kind of divine inspiration is largely missing in Rob Marshall’s almost-dramatically inert adaptation of the musical “Nine.”

The psychological reasoning for bursting into song doesn’t really play, and the thematic placement of the musical numbers feels shoe-horned in. And, almost to a criminal fault, practically none of these numbers add much character insight or move the plot forward – a Musical 101 no-no.

People have accused us of being “Nine” crazy, but considering what’s left in the year, what’s there to really be excited for? (please don’t mention the flying blue furballs)

Though, we’re not clueless. This one could be iffy if the songs are cornball (and the Kate Hudson, “Cinema Italiano” track isn’t great by any means).

Still we hold out hope because Rob Marshall’s “Chicago” was great and who even remembers the songs?

‘Nine’ Soundtrack Details: Album Hits Dec 22, Features Four Bonus Cuts, Including Noisettes Track

We’ve already revealed that the “Nine” soundtrack will feature three new songs and will arrive in stores on December 22, and now the artwork and final tracklist has arrived and it tells us who sings what and like all soundtracks, is pretty much in the order they’ll arrive onscreen. And actually, now there’s four bonus cuts.

Curiously enough, one of these extra tracks from the album comes from the U.K. soulful indie-rock pop band, The Noisettes who are doing the song, “Io bacio… tu baci” which is actually the name of a Piero Vivarelli 1961 Italian musical comedy, so presumably they’re covering that film’s theme song (we wonder if any of them will actually feature in the film).

Danny Boyle Bailed On ‘My Fair Lady’ Because He Couldn’t Get Daniel Day-Lewis?

We’ve all been burned by the U.K. press/tabloids before, particularly with the still-in-development “My Fair Lady” project that seems trouble finding a director.

This spring Danny Boyle was rumored to be circling the project, and this fall a supposedly reputable U.K. source (The London Telegraph) made up a story (or got their intel totally wrong) that Joe Wright was getting ready to film the project with Scarlett Johansson and while we fell for it initially, we quickly called shenanigans on the report.

Rob Marshall Confirms He’s Directing ‘Pirates 4’

We were hoping Rob Marshall would pass on “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” a gig he was in talks for earlier this year, but so much time had passed (at least in blog years) we assumed he had moved on (plus we had heard some rumors of a British director possibly jumping on board).

But it seems that Marshall has confirmed that he will be the next captain of the “Pirates 4” ship.

New ‘Nine’ Music Trailer: “Cinema Italiano” Plus First Review

Yes, another day, another “Nine” post, or in this case, three posts in 48 hours, deal with it. Yet another trailer has been released via Yahoo and it’s a music trailer featuring Kate Hudson auto-tuning her way through a song called, “Cinema Italiano.” It’s not that she sounds bad, it’s that she just sounds a little soullessly perfect, which is what happens when vocals are autotuned to death.

Still style-wise? The film looks nonpareil.

Rob Marshall’s “Nine” musical is almost upon us. New songs leaked this weekend, junkateer screenings happened this weekend — everyone’s first born was evidently promised if they spoke out of turn — and you can just feel this one set to pop any moment now. Meanwhile a boatload of new press images have been released.

Our favorites are featured here throughout. A commenter recently quipped at another commenter on our site who thought it looked boring, “So straight men don’t like seeing women in movies now?” And well, we have to concur, Penelope Cruz looks… ravishing (she also looks great in these photos).

Penlope Cruz Makes “A Call FromThe Vatican” In New ‘Nine’ Clip; Plus 2 New Songs

Okay, it isn’t much – only about twenty seconds worth of footage – but it’s the longest video of a solo performance we’ve seen yet from the forthcoming musical “Nine” and it looks great. In the clip, Penelope Cruz sings and struts though what looks to be the last moments of “A Call From The Vatican.” We’re not sure where this clip, grabbed from an NBC broadcast, is originally from but it’s strong proof that “Nine” is aiming to be an old fashioned, rousing, crowd pleasing musical of yore.

Disney & Weinstein Company Form MegaPact To Promote Rob Marshall’s ‘Nine,’ Plus New Photos

The Weinstein Company, always with an ace up their sleeve, have pulled out the whole deck this fall, by announcing a “megapact” with Disney to promote their Oscar hopeful “Nine.” The deal will find promotional content for the film blitzed across the numerous channels the round-eared media conglomerate owns.

On November 17th, “Dancing With The Stars” with have a routine set to the song “Be Italian” from the film, while dancers wear outfits from the movie.

First Listen: Fergie’s ‘Be Italian’ From ‘Nine;’ Plus New Cotillard Image & Official Site Launch

So you’ve heard Fergie’s version, or some version anyhow, of “Be Italian,” in the trailer to Rob Marshall’s “Nine,” but now the entire version of the song has leaked which you can hear below.

The soundtrack features three new songs not in the original Broadway play — which itself is a musical riff on Federico Fellini’s influential touchstone, “8 1/2” — and hits shelves December 23. It seems the song was ripped in full from the official website which recently launched and features quotes from all the characters in the film.

Holiday shopping for the musical lover on your list just got a little bit easier as Geffen Records announced that the soundtrack to the Weinstein Oscar hopeful, “Nine,” will be released on Dec. 22 — just four days after its NY/LA opening and three days before the film’s wide release on Christmas Day.

In addition to songs that have been featured in the Tony-award winning Broadway show, the film and soundtrack will feature three brand new songs written by Maury Yeston.

Post Film Festival Season: Re-Taking The Oscar Temperature

The Oscar temperature rises and falls like autumn caught between an Indian summer and November (errr, or something), but now that the Fall Film Festival season is completely over (except maybe for the AFI fest, but they have nothing new) the landscape has started to settle and we’re almost set in place.

The dirty little secret of Oscar prognosticating (at least to the Oscar predix sites who like to claim ownership over this field), is that it’s really not that difficult to surmise what’s going to happen (though, guys like Scott Feinberg and InContention are better at predicting the final winners than most).

Behind The Scenes Rehearsal Featurette From ‘Nine’

Yahoo Movies has released a “rehearsal montage” of Rob Marshall’s musical, “Nine,” which is basically a mini-featured with rehearsal footage interspliced with quick clips from the film, but it does whet our appetite for the full feature-film which is sizable.

An adaptation of a Broadway musical inspired by Fellini’s “8 1/2,” the all-star film features Daniel Day-Lewis as a film director haunted by the women in his life — Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Fergie, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, and Sophia Loren — ranging from mistress, to wife, to muse, to deceased mother.

‘Nine’ Officially Moves To December 18, Goes Wide Dec 25

As predicted (and suggested by the trades) the Weinstein Company has moved the release of their musical feature-film, “Nine.” The original release date for the Rob Marshall-directed picture was slotted for November 25 earlier this year, but then another TWC film, “The Road,” was saddled with bad buzz after the Venice Film Festival and then also bumped to November 25.

Not wanting to have releases in competition with each other the same weekend (although the audience is completely different and “The Road” is starting in wide release) pundits assumed that TWC would eventually move “Nine,” ostensibly a big Oscar candidate, to deeper into 2009 and Rope Of Silicon now confirms that the film has indeed moved and has now been scheduled for a limited release on December 18 in New York and Los Angeles and will then go wide on December 25.

Not So ‘Precious’: Harvey Weinstein’s Lawsuits Dealt Blow

Harvey Weinstein lives for Oscars. Whether they mean as much monetarily as they did a few years ago remains to be seen, but he still loves the race and everything it entails. At one point in his career he was a master of the Oscar campaign (somehow convincing the Academy that “Shakespeare In Love” was a better movie than “Saving Private Ryan”).

So just asked week we asked, what’s the status of the Weinstein Company lawsuit against Lawsuit and the producers of the film for the rights to “Precious: Based on the Novel by Sapphire,” especially after receiving a huge Oscar bump last week when it won the People’s Choice audience award at the 2009 Toronto Intl.
