It’s been over a year since Spike Lee was first mentioned as a possible director for the Spider-Man spin-off film “Nightwatch.” Then in March, it was reported that he signed on to take the directing duties for the superhero film, based on the script from “Luke Cage” showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker. But since then, we haven’t heard a peep about the film, even with the recent success of “Venom.” Well, Spike Lee seems to have given us the reason why we haven’t had any updates about his film — he’s not attached to it.

It looks like Sony is enlisting filmmaker Spike Lee to help with their extended Spider-Man Universe.

With Spider-Man fighting Thanos over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony is utilizing their Marvel rights as much as possible, with films based on Spider-Man side characters. One such character is the little-known hero called Nightwatch. And The Hollywood Reporter is saying that veteran filmmaker Spike Lee is the man assigned to adapting “Nightwatch” for the big screen.

Can you believe Spike Lee has been making movies for more than 30 years now? His greatest movie, “Do the Right Thing,” didn’t even get a Best Picture nomination in 1989, with the Academy instead opting for the safer, gentler, but nevertheless forgettable whimsy of “Driving Miss Daisy.” We all know which film stood the test of time and which film, as Lee pointed out recently, is taught in film schools all across the U.S.
