“A Family Affair,” the new, somewhat superficial Netflix rom-com from writer/director Richard LaGravenese (“The Last Five Years,” “Beautiful Creatures”), is by no means brilliant or full of depth. And yet, still, the trio of Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King create an interesting dynamic; the ultimately well-intentioned film has some interesting things to say about late-in-life love, the many facets of self-absorption, and the way we use the notion of protecting the ones we love under the guise of selfish self-interest.

Noticeable absent, “Stranger Things” season five and “Wednesday” season two from Tim Burton, so we may officially be waiting until 2025.

Even in its original, nearly three-hour shape, Baz Luhrmann’s “Australia” was a lot of movie beyond just length. Sandwiched within that ambitious old school Hollywood undertaking—about an Englishwoman who inherits a sprawling ranch and the drover she teams up with herding cattle across an unforgiving land— was a broad screwball meet-cute romcom between Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman’s characters—at least at first, those rhythms are unmistakable—a fabulist fairy tale about dreamers, an idealistic ranching Western, a sweeping wild wilderness adventure, an immense historical epic (with elements of brassy, jazz-age chutzpah to add yet another flavor), a mystical fable about Indigenous people, and a grand, lush romance.

Following the success of 2001’s “Moulin Rouge!” the Oscar winner joined Hugh Jackman and reunited with director Baz Luhrmann for the 2009 period epic, “Australia.” The movie earned middling reviews, but more importantly, was a box office bomb earning just $211 million worldwide off a reportedly $130 million budget. It was such a miss, that it ended Luhrmann’s streak at (then) 20th Century Fox, where he’d effectively launched his career as a global commercial filmmaker.
