In just three years, Academy Award nominee Zach Baylin has established himself as one of the hottest writers in Hollywood. The original “Nosferatu,” from all the way back in 1921, is scary. The German expressionist silent film, directed by early Hollywood filmmaker F.W. Murnau, is well-paced and shot with many shadows and sharp angles, producing a menacing effect. Plus, Max Schreck, as the lead Count Orlok, is just eerie and scary in the role. Enough so that a movie, “Shadow of the Vampire,” was made as a fictitious account of Schrek’s wild behavior on set.

Having now screened Justin Kurzel’s “The Order,” a world premiere at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival, we are still perplexed how its subject matter has become an almost forgotten footnote in American history. Chances are you were unaware of a White Nationalist movement in the Northwest United States in the 1970s and ’80s. Or, that in 1983, a splinter group known as The Order, wreaked havoc robbing banks, printed counterfeit money, killed innocent civilians, and, eventually, assassinated a public figure.

The anticipation for films coming out in 2024 just got slightly bigger. While we were all presuming it would arrive next year, Focus Features’ “Nosferatu” horror from filmmaker Robert Eggers is coming much later than expected. And with a much bigger launchpad. Focus Features has announced the movie is being dated on December 25, 2024. Yep, it’s a big scary horror movie on Christmas Day, which is unusual and non-traditional and likely means Focus has a lot of confidence in the picture.

Following the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, director James Gunn quickly assured his followers on social media that “Superman: Legacy,” his next directorial effort, would not be delayed and would keep its 2025 date. And in seemingly keeping with that full-steam-ahead promise, it appears that Gunn has found one of his primary villains.

Deadline reports that Nicholas Hoult (“The Great,” “Renfield”) has been cast as Lex Luthor in the film, Superman’s famous arch-enemy in the comics, and every screen version of the man of steel we’ve ever seen.

His body of work is, of course, unassailable, but with Cage, it’s as much about methodology as it is about the performances themselves. Phrases like “nouveau shamanism” have entered the lexicon not as a punchline but out of an earnest desire for actor and moviegoers to create a dialogue about performance. We love watching Cage talk about method because he is so rarely naturalistic onscreen but always, sometimes inexplicably, in perfect alignment with the material.
