Deadline reports that the “Candyman” director is in talks with Sony Pictures to direct the second film in the upcoming “28 Years Later” trilogy. If DaCosta does signs on, she’ll shoot her installment immediately after Danny Boyle wraps the first one later this year.

It’s not a good day for Marvel Studios as their third film of 2023, “The Marvels,” opened to just $47 million at the U.S. box office—the lowest-grossing opening weekend of any Marvel movie ever (yes, even lower than 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” and lower than all of the 2021 pandemic-affected films like the poorly-received “Eternals”).

Her directorial debut “Little Woods” sees its protagonist (Tessa Thompson) trying to create a life when local vengeance gets in the way, while “Candyman” sees artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) get ever closer to folklore’s Candyman, the vengeful spirit of a wrongly murdered man who can overtake your life if you whisper enough times into a mirror.

The film would get marketed all over the place, box office analysts would try to figure out which records it would break, and early reactions would praise the studio and the characters as invincible. Well, that time has come and gone, and now, box office projections are low, the SAG strike prevents the type of marketing we expect, and early reactions are, well, muted.

Is this week the make-or-break week for Marvel in 2023? Because some reports suggest that the upcoming “The Marvels” is tracking to less than DC’s disastrous “The Flash” and “Black Adam.” This would be a devastating narrative for Marvel and would be their lowest-opening film in years, even worse than the figures posted by movies like “Eternals” in the heart of the pandemic.

Depends on who you ask, and arguably, it would be a bad one if it were for “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” rescuing the year with great box office success. How has the usually-dependable Marvel fared at the box office? So far, one big underwhelming disappointment, “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” which only grossed $476 million worldwide, the lowest-grossing Marvel movie since 2011’s “Thor” (not counting the pandemic releases of “Black Widow,” “Shang Chi” and “Eternals” which were all lower, but those were different circumstances).

It’s an argument that everyone’s been having in the last few years, and the pandemic hasn’t helped, given that it’s affected the bottom line of all moviegoing that’s in decline. DC doesn’t help the super narrative; they’re in freefall. And Marvel? Well, “Ant-Man Quantumania” grossly underperformed earlier this year, but “Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 3” made nearly $850 million worldwide and evened out the narrative.

That’s a figure that Marvel is unlikely going to replicate these days, but they took a unique and interesting tact for the sequel. Instead of a straight-up “Captain Marvel 2” film, the comic book studio pivoted to an all-girls team-up film, teaming up Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) with Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) from her own “Ms.

After 2020 saw reasonable gains in parity amongst female and male filmmakers, 2021 has taken a step back, according to a new survey.

After breaking out with her festival standout drama, “Little Woods,” the new horror film marks DaCosta’s first major studio work. And she’s already following “Candyman” up with an absolutely massive blockbuster, “The Marvels” for Marvel Studios. And it’s that superhero film that really has DaCosta excited because she sees it as an important opportunity for a Black filmmaker in Hollywood.

A grim poetic tome that feels neither at home with the schlocky ’80s slashers before it or post-modern “Scream” appearing several years later. A ghost story cum slasher, it sits like a misbehaving child in a family picture. The mixture of gore and intelligent social commentary did its job, however.

With a script co-written by horror maestro Jordan Peele and frequent Peele collaborator Win Rosenfeld, DaCosta’s film may end up being the summer’s big horror film over the likes of “Old” and “A Quiet Place: Part II.”
