The New York Film Critics Circle kicked off the annual year-end deluge of critics’ honors by announcing their best of 2023 today and the big winner was Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of The Flower Moon” which took Best Film. Christopher Nolan won Best Director for “Oppenheimer” while Celine Song’s “Past Lives” won Best First Film.

This is the third Scorsese film to win the NYFCC’s top prize after “Goodfellas” in 1991 and “The Irishman” in 2020.

The New York Film Critics Circle announced their annual year-end honors, giving an awards season boost to one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year, Ryusuke Hamaguchi‘s “Drive My Car.” Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” took three honors including Best Director, Best Actor (Benedict Cumberbatch), and Best Supporting Actor (Kodi Smit-McPhee). For those paying attention, it’s worth noting the NYFCC’s top pick hasn’t won the Oscar for Best Picture since “The Artist” 10 years ago, but every winner has been nominated in the category.

The New York Film Critics Circle revealed their year-end honors and, surprise, Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow” won Best Film. It was a year of female filmmakers being honored by the organization as Chloé Zhao won Best Director for “Nomadland,” Eliza Hittman earned a Best Screenplay honor for “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” and Radha Blank took Best First Film for “The 40-Year-Old Version.”

The organization also honored Spike Lee with a special award for his short film “New York, New York” and “advocating for a better society through cinema.” Two of the stars of his Netflix film “Da 5 Bloods,” Delroy Lindo and Chadwick Boseman, won Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.

Tiffany Haddish has become the unlikely darling of the awards season. The breakout star of “Girls Trip” has become a critical favorite, and her epic, hilarious acceptance speech at the New York Film Critics Circle has only cemented the love for the actress. Well, now one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed auteurs wants to connect with Haddish.

While he couldn’t attend the show himself, Paul Thomas Anderson sent a message along with his “Phantom Thread” star Lesley Manville, to pass along to Haddish.

When Tiffany Haddish won Best Supporting Actress from the New York Film Critics Circle for her performance in “Girls Trip,” it barely registered with the actress. In fact, she had to inquire with others whether or not it was a big deal.

“I didn’t know [the group] existed,” Haddish told The New York Times. “I had to ask people, ‘What is the importance of it?’ Jada [Pinkett Smith] called me and told me, ‘I’m so proud of you.’ I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ She was like, ‘Girl, it is an honor.’ And I said, ‘Why is it an honor?’ And she said, ‘It’s an honor because they don’t like people.’ I said, ‘Yeah they do, they gotta like somebody.’ And she said, ‘It’s really hard to get in.

As always, The New York Film Critics Circle took hours to determine their year-end awards for 2017. By the time it was all said and done, Greta Gerwig‘s “Lady Bird” took home two of the biggest honors, Best Picture and Best Actress for Saoirse Ronan. Both wins not only help solidify nominations in both Oscar categories, but likely put Gerwig square in the mix for a Best Director nomination as well.

All it took to for the LA Times to earn the wrath of Disney was the publication of the two-part story: “Is Disney paying its share in Anaheim?” and “How one election changed Disneyland’s relationship with its hometown.” The mega-corporation did not take kindly to anybody daring to question their business practices, and swiftly barred LA Times reporters and critics from covering their films. Disney went on to defend the decision, saying they believed the Times reporting was “biased and inaccurate.”

Now, the LA Times is getting some massive support from their colleagues in their battle against Disney.

The New York Film Critics Circle announced their 2017 year-end winners this morning and everything was just what you’d expect right up until the last award was announced.

Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” and Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea” won three awards each with the duo splitting Best Director and Best Screenplay respectively.  You would have assumed the organization would pick between the two films for it’s top honor.  And it made a lot of sense as both dramas were rumored to be in the running for the top prize for weeks.
