Ever since he came to Danny Boyle’s attention by writing the source material for the filmmaker’s “The Beach,” novelist-turned-screenwriter Alex Garland has been carving out a neat little niche for himself as the writer of some unusually thoughtful science fiction projects. From his collaborations with Boyle on “28 Days Later” and “Sunshine” to the recently-released “Never Let Me Go,” Garland’s lent a fresh take to familiar tropes, even if in the first two cases he wasn’t able to escape the trappings of the genre, and the films tended to fall apart in the final act.

For the rest of 2010, the box office numbers have a chance to significantly alter the Oscar race. With the remaining films of ‘10 in play, the ones without unmanageable budgets are likely gambling for gold. As much as we like to think the Oscar voting happens in a bubble, those with ballots are strongly aware of what plays with audiences and what doesn’t, especially considering the extended nominees list is a format more generous to crowd-pleasers.

Even though it’s still officially summer, this week’s lineup has an autumnal feel, with solid dramas, awards bait, and even a well-crafted comedy to attract moviegoers. Four films are opening wide this week and the number one slot is wide open. The strongest contender is most likely the cops and robbers heist picture “The Town,” from director Ben Affleck. The film has very strong critical notices as does the charming teen comedy “Easy A,” which should have a shelf life for years as good films for teenagers are few and far between.

Just a warning: we’re going to talk about the ‘big secret’ of the film right from the start because firstly, it’s fully revealed about half an hour in, and secondly, while it informs the world the characters inhabit it’s not the primary dramatic arc of the film. So if you’d rather go in fresh, you’d probably best stop here, but for the rest of you, read on.

Mark Romanek’s third feature, eight long years after “One Hour Photo” (and shortly after his aborted attempt to make “The Wolf Man”) finds the director adapting Kazuo Ishiguro’s celebrated novel “Never Let Me Go.” The story is largely set in an adjusted 1980s, a couple of decades after medical science has discovered a way to farm fully functioning human beings to be used later as organ donors for the rest of society, extending life expentancy to over 100 years by allowing diseased vital organs to be replaced.

Our EIC noted a few years back when Mark Romanek joined the illustrious Director’s Label Series alongside nu-cinema upstarts Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry and Chris Cunningham that the music video director had won a “whopping 20 Moonmen, plus the only MTV Video Vanguard Award ever given to a director independent of any specific artist.” Not even David Fincher and Paul Hunter who made their names on iconic music videos before they transferred over to feature filmmaking could boast those stats and yet, in most cinephile circles, Romanek isn’t quite as well known or revered as Fincher, Jonze and Gondry.

Telluride 2010 is in full swing and the first major film has screened. It’s Mark Romanek’s highly anticipated (at least from us) third feature-length drama, “Never Let Me Go” starring Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and the soon-to-be new “Spider-Man” Andrew Garfield (the kid can truly act and you’ll all see soon enough). The picture takes place in a boarding school and tracks the lives and friendships of three students (mentioned above) who eventually learn a dark secret about their existence.

After releasing the first extended scene from Mark Romanek’s “Never Let Me Go” earlier this week, Fox Searchlight continues its slow, methodical promotional roll out for the film by unveiling Rachel Portman’s score for the movie. While the official soundtrack won’t be available in record stores until September 14, it’s now available for download on iTunes.

As we previously mentioned, Portman’s score is quite lovely.

This writer had a pretty good time at the BFI London Film Festival last year; while there was a few high-profile disappointments like “Nowhere Boy” and “Glorious 39,” many of the big films like “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and “Up in the Air” more than delivered, while smaller gems like “Mother,” “Scouting Book For Boys” and “Father Of My Children” provided most of the highlights.

The festival’s rolling around again, set to run from October 13th to 28th, and the organizers announced yesterday that Mark Romanek’s “Never Let Me Go” will make its European debut at the opening night of the festival.

A trailer, a poster, an early look and apparently a cut that made Spike Jonze cry; needless to say we’re looking forward to Mark Romanek’s adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s celebrated novel “Never Let Me Go.” And now, Fox Searchlight has released two more images to whet our appetites.

Boasting a strong cast that includes Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, Andrew Garfield, Sally Hawkins, Charlotte Rampling, Nathalie Richard and Andrea Riseborough it’s difficult to talk about the plot without giving up the entire film, but it’s a sci-fi-ish romance that takes place at a boarding school where all is not quite what it seems.

Here’s your first look at the one-sheet/teaser poster for Mark Romanek’s “Never Let Me Go,” a melancholy drama with some vague hints of sci-fi (but not enough to, you know, show at Comic-Con or anything). It’s pretty and showcases leads Andrew Garfield and It-girl Carey Mulligan running from… their problems?… but it’s honestly not that much to look at and we assume Fox Searchlight will probably release a much more straightforward poster at some point as well (presumably with Keira Knightley’s face on it, since she is the film’s biggest star).

In related release date news, that’s could be less than favorable this time, Mark Romanek’s melancholy and sci-fi-ish tinged drama, “Never Let Me Go” has been bumped up from its October 1 release date to a September 15 bow. Fox Searchlight probably didn’t want to go toe-to-toe with David Fincher’s “The Social Network.”

Or, it could mean one of two things. The positive: It’s being included as part of the 201o Toronto International Film Festival and will premiere earlier that week (TIFF runs September 9-19), much like Steven Soderbergh’s “The Informant” which had a similar release date last year and debut at TIFF just a few days early.

The trailer for Mark Romanek’s highly anticipated film, “Never Let Me Go” is finally online. The Fox Searchlight film is a melancholy, sci-fi-ish (sorta) human drama that has an incredible cast, including Carey Mulligan (“An Education,” “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps”), Keira Knightley, Andrew Garfield (“Red Riding” trilogy, “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”), Sally Hawkins (“Happy Go-Lucky”), Charlotte Rampling, Nathalie Richard, and Andrea Riseborough.

Knightley might be the bigger, well-known actor, but Mulligan is actually the lead and regardless, we have to say this trailer looks excellent.

Or at least it does according to the filmmaker himself.
