Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh has tackled every genre under the sun: the heist thriller with the “Ocean’s” franchise, sci-fi with “Solaris,” WWII films (“The Good German”), the action genre (“Haywire”),  thrillers of all sorts (“Contagion,” “Side Effects,” “Kimi”), comedies (“The Informant!”) and more. But aside from “Unsane,” which flirted with the psychological horror genre, Soderbergh has never really done traditional horror.

NEON has picked up yet another 2024 festival award-winner for distribution. Variety reports that the independent distribution company has a deal ready to pick up Mike Flanagan‘s “The Life Of Chuck,” which just won the People’s Choice Award at TIFF earlier this month.  No word yet if TIFF will get Flanagan’s latest in theaters in time for awards season, but it’s likely they’ll wait to release it next summer.

As the new poster for his forthcoming movie “Presence” suggests, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh has done it all and then some. The eclectic and prolific filmmaker has pretty much attempted every genre: made popcorn entertainment like the “Ocean’s” and “Magic Mike” trilogies, acclaimed Oscar-winning dramas (“Traffic,” “Erin Brockovich”), comedies, (“The Informant”) compelling and comedic crime dramas (“Out Of Sight,” “Logan Lucky”), thrillers of all stripes (“Contagion,” “Unsane”), and low-budget arthouse indies like his career-making debut, “Sex, Lies And Videotape.” And for “Presence,” the filmmaker tackles the sub-genre of the eerie ghost movie, perhaps the closest he’s ever come to making a horror film outside of “Unsane.”

We love to see a creative keep scaling up. Watching Pamela Adlon evolve and progress over the last few years has been terrific. An outstanding comedian who rose in popularity on FX’s Louis C.K. comedy “Louie,” after the stint on that series, Adlon graduated to her own similarly personal show “Better Things.” Created by Adlon and C.K., she quickly took over the full reins and started directing on the series as well. And by season two, all the way through its final fifth season, she was directing the entire series and had a hand in writing a bulk of it, too.

That seems to be the case with “Mother’s Instinct,” the directorial debut of well-renowned French DP Benoît Delhomme. Known for films like Anton Corbijn’s “A Most Wanted Man” and Julian Schnabel’s “At Eternity’s Gate,” he’s also worked with Jessica Chastain a few times on “Lawless,” “Wild Salome,” and some photography work he did for Terrence Malick’s “Tree Of Life.” So perhaps the favor extends to starring in “Mother’s Instinct,” Delhomme’s directorial debut, which will arrive later this year via NEON.
