Brace yourselves, movie audiences: a new “Cliffhanger” movie is on the way.  But the upcoming reboot isn’t the same concept that once had Sylvester Stallone returning and Ana Lily Amirpour attached to direct.  It turns out Stallone isn’t back after all, and Amirpour’s out behind the camera, although her all-female story is still the basis of the script.

The newest trend in horror is this: once you’ve exhausted your franchise with as many sequels as possible, many of them delivering diminishing returns, unfortunately, the only way forward is backward. And thus, you’ll have noticed many horror franchises going the prequel route in order to start fresh and new. Recent examples include “Prometheus,” “Prey,” “Pearl,” “Insidious: Chapter 3,” “Annabelle: Creation,” and “Ouija: Origin of Evil” (though yes, the trend goes way back).

It’s almost hard to believe that Apple TV+ is old enough already to have a show about to reach its conclusion after four seasons, but that’s where we are with the underrated “Servant,” a twisted little gem that was created by Tony Basgallop and executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan (who has also directed a few episodes). One of the streaming giant’s first series way back in November 2019, “Servant” initially felt like something of a psychological mystery about a grieving mother given an impossible second chance, but it has descended into deeper levels of surreal chaos with each season.

Given his checkered career, there were no guarantees that M. Night Shyamalan‘s involvement in the AppleTV+ series “Servant” would bode well for the new streaming platform. However, “Servant” ended up being one of the better-received shows on AppleTV+ last year by critics and audiences alike. Of course, Shyamalan doesn’t deserve all the credit there. The series is originally the brainchild of BAFTA-nominated writer Tony Basgallop, and the show’s unnerving set-up catered itself to any viewer who loves the creepy and macabre.

Night Shyamalan’s psychological horror series for AppleTV “Servant” was a curious affair, in that, it ended with one of his trademark twists, and a creepy ellipsis, almost as if he took a movie idea of his and turned it into a limited series. “Servant” had a perfectly chilling ending, but behold, well, now it’s a series and the story continues (which is part of the neverending-story quality of television, but that’s a rant for another time).
