The New York Film Critics Circle anointed “Killers of the Flower Moon” as their Best Film of 2023 and now the National Board of Review has revealed their top pick, and, surprise, it’s also Martin Scorsese’s latest. Scorsese was also named Best Director and Lily Gladstone Best Actress by the New York City-based cinephile organization.

This is the third time since 2011 that Scorsese has won Best Film after “Hugo” took it that year and “The Irishman” won in 2019.

No other film caused as big a sensation this year as “Top Gun: Maverick.” No other movie made as much money either, with Joseph Kosinski‘s film making $1.478 billion at the worldwide box office. Time will tell if James Cameron‘s “Avatar: The Way Of Water” overtakes “Maverick” on both fronts, but there’s one thing that film won’t do: it won’t be the National Board Of Review‘s Best Film of 2022.

The National Board of Review is traditionally the first “awards group” (we use that term lightly with them) to announce their honorees for the season. This year, the organization somewhat surprised by selecting Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza” for Best Film and Best Director. And, in a move that will raise some eyebrows, completely snubbed Jane Campion‘s highly lauded “The Power of the Dog.”

It should be noted, however, that NBR has a very spotty record picking Best Picture with only its 2018 winner, “Green Book,” taking Oscar’s top prize in 2019.

The New York Times Critic Circle selected “First Cow.” The Los Angeles Film Critics Association picked “Small Axe.” And now the National Board of Review has finally weighed in by announcing that Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods” is their selection for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Ensemble of 2020.

“Sound of Metal’s” Riz Ahmed took Best Actor while “Promising Young Woman’s” Carey Mulligan won Best Actress.

Considering their previous picks, the fact the National Board of Review has selected Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” as Best Picture of the year wasn’t that big of a surprise. The New York based “awards group” filled with NYU students and, um, movie fans, selected Scorsese’s “Hugo” in 2011 and has an affinity for East Coast tales.  That being said, the organization always has some unexpected selections overall.

Not surprising was Quentin Tarantino Best Director win for “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood,” Brad Pitt’s Best Supporting Actor win, also for “Hollywood,” Rene Zellwegger winning Best Actress for “Judy” or Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” taking Best Foreign Language Film.

The always mercurial New York-based National Board of Review (you too can be a member!) announced their year-end honors as Peter Farrelly’s “Green Book” took the celebrated Best Film honor. The organization also showed its love to “A Star is Born,” however, as Bradley Cooper’s hit took Best Director (Cooper), Best Actress (New York native Lady Gaga) and Best Supporting Actor (Sam Elliot).

The National Board of Review announced its honorees for 2017 and “The Post,” “Get Out” and distributor A24 were the big winners of the day.

Steven Spielberg’s “The Post” took three honors including Best Picture, Best Actress (Meryl Streep) and Best Actor (Tom Hanks).  “Get Out” won Best Ensemble while director Jordan Peele took Breakthrough Director. Outside of “The Post,” the biggest winner of the day wasn’t one particular film, but one particular distributor.

The National Board of Review has announced its year end honors and “Manchester by the Sea” has been named Best Film. The biggest news may be the films the NBR completely shut out from any recognition whatsoever: Denzel Washington’s “Fences,” Pablo Larrain’s “Jackie,” Tom Ford’s “Nocturnal Animals,” Jeff Nichols’ “Loving,” Stephen Frears’ “Florence Foster Jenkins” and Garth Davis’ “Lion.”

As for “Manchester,” Kenneth Longergan‘s Sundance drama also took Best Actor for Casey Affleck, Original Screenplay and Breakthrough Performance (Male) for Lucas Hedges.
