We have been woefully remiss in filing my SXSW reports, but this is in part due to the psychic trauma inflicted by Gaspar Noe’s extraordinary “Enter The Void,” his nearly three hour phantasmagoric assault on the senses and the psyche (and hell, a new trailer just hit so why not discuss it again?). We’re still recovering from it. To get a small sense of the experience, turn your lights off, turn the volume up, and watch the film’s seizure-inducing opening title sequence in full-screen 720p on your computer.

The picture played at Cannes in 2009 to very mixed reviews. Most critics thought the film was self-indulgent trash and the rare critic — like the A/V Club’s Mike D’Angelo — thought it was a masterpiece of experimental cinema.

In retrospect, it seems that Gaspar Noe’s unwieldy and tripped-out epic “Enter the Void” may have caused more of a stir at Cannes (instead of just off-handed dismissal) had it premiered before Lars Von Trier’s “Antichrist.” By the time ‘Void’ lumbered onto the screen at the tail end of Cannes, the aborted fetuses, excessive drug use, endless, explicit sex (including one scene made to look like it was filmed inside a vagina) and ambient visual passages akin to those in the Von Trier provocation, may have had less impact due to collective numbness.

The day we were leaving Cannes, we already caught wind that Michael Haneke’s “The White Ribbon,” was hit and miss for many people, and figured that Gilliam’s ‘Doctor Parnassus’ would probably be uneven as well, so on our way to the airport, our most anticipated film of the festival was Gaspar Noé’s “Enter The Void,” a “psychedelic melodrama”/surrealistic nightmare-sounding picture about a man who is shot and killed, but refuses to leave the earth because of the promise he has made to protect his sister (Paz de la Huerta).

We corresponded with Jeffrey Wells this morning and compared notes. We both wrote the international press contacts for Gaspar Noé’s new picture “Enter The Void,” which screens near the end of the Cannes Film Festival on May 22, hoping to potentially see it earlier at any possible market screenings, but were both told the same thing: there would be no market screenings (by the way, here’s the film’s excellent new poster, update: the old poster we had up was fan made, thanks to the reader for the tip).

Nice. Thomas Bangalter, one half of electronic French house innovator’s Daft Punk, has written the score for Gaspar Noé’s “Enter The Void,” according to the press notes from the Cannes Film Festival.

Noé is the French-Argentine provacateur behind hard-t0-watch transgressive films like “Irreversible” and “I Stand Alone.” And “Enter The Void” centers on a young man (Nathaniel Brown) who promises to protect his little sister ( Paz de la Huerta, the sexy and very-naked temptress of “The Limits of Control”) sister after the brutal death of their parents.
