James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman: Legacy” (summer 2025) promises to be the first theatrical entry point for the newly branded DCU. And it has been said that the superhero pic will usher in a heap of various DC Comics characters that will get fleshed out down the road as DC Studios looks to create their own cinematic universe. It turns out that talk is correct, and there is now a big update on what some of those characters will be with new actors joining the cast.

Filmmaker Joss Whedon (“Avengers”) has had a bad couple of years. Starting in the summer of 2020, after “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” was announced, a wave of accusations about the director’s reportedly appalling behavior on the set of 2016’s “Justice League,” started to surface. Led by “Justice League” actor Ray Fisher, the worst of these claims included allegations that Whedon had threatened Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot during the reshoots of their embattled superhero film.

James Gunn is no stranger to superhero success. The director’s two “Guardians of the Galaxy” films for Marvel Studios are among the most commercially successful in the MCU catalog. Now, Warner Bros. hopes some of Gunn’s magic will rub off on one of their DC Films properties that’s right up the director’s alley: cinemagoers’ favorite group of villainous oddballs, “The Suicide Squad.”

Buried at the bottom of the aforementioned L.A. Times piece about “Thor” and “Captain America” going conversion 3D, is a little mention that a Marvel insider says a “name” actor will be announced at Comic Con for The Hulk/Bruce Banner role in “The Avengers” now that Ed Norton was officially bounced out of that role.

The L.A. Times says this Marvel contact would not confirm or deny rumors of Joaquin Phoenix, Adrien Brody, Nathan Fillion and David Tennant being up for the Hulk role in the ‘Avengers’ picture that will be directed by Joss Whedon.

With Marvel Studios striking out on their own, DC knew they were going to have to make a big splash to compete with titles beyond Bats and Supes.
