This biweekly column sifts through all of those choices to pluck out the movies most worth your time, no matter how you’re watching.

Two potentially major productions caught in the wheels of the lockdown hit disc and (reasonable) VOD this week, alongside a Sundance doc on Apple TV+, a lovely new musical bio-doc, and the usual bushel of marvelous catalog titles from Criterion, Warner Archive, and Kino-Lorber.

Is Atom Egoyan’s ‘Chloe’ His Most Accessible Film Since ‘The Sweet Hereafter’?

To attend Atom Egoyan’s “Chloe” at the Toronto Int. Film Festival or not. That is the question.

Or at least one we’ve been toying with and then when we think about it for a second, we remember that Egoyan’s work in the last few years has been largely unsuccessful, cerebral to the point of alienation, or just plain obtuse and dull. Some would say the Canadian director just crawled up his own esoteric ass.

‘Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus’ Added To TIFF ’09 Line-Up

The 2009 Toronto International Film Festival has added twenty eight more films to its ever-expanding and pretty solid line-up this year, though admittedly, perhaps they’re getting to the lesser films and maybe the best pictures have already been announced? It’s hard to say, TIFF is still a few weeks off so there’s plenty of time to announce more films (we’ll likely be eating these words soon, we’ve heard, “The White Ribbon” will be announced eventually).

RIP: Natasha Richardson 1963-2009

Final Update: Nastasha Richardson has passed away. A statement from her publicists read: “Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha. They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time.” The actress, who was 45, died of medical complications from a head injury in a ski accident.

Man, sad.
