Stunt dude turned director Nash Edgerton made his feature debut nearly a decade ago with “The Square.” The thriller kept the screws turning on its characters, and it looks like there will be a similar vibe with his latest, “Gringo,” but with some broad comedy tossed into the mix.

Starring Joel Edgerton, David Oyelowo, Amanda Seyfried, Charlize Theron, Yul Vazquez, Thandie Newton, Sharlto Copley and Harry Treadaway, the story follows a businessman who winds up having to tangle with Mexican drug lords.

Hollywood tends to look at Mexico through two very different lenses — either as a culturally rich country like in “Coco,” or ground zero for the duplicitous drug trade like in “Sicario.” However, “Gringo” is hoping to mix the latter with some A-list stars and comedic touches and deliver something different.
