Since then, the duo has married in real life, but they have yet to reconnect on screen. Thankfully, Korean filmmaker Na Hong-Jin is going to fix that with his new film, “Hope.”

But that was almost seven years ago, so what has Na been up to lately? Well, the director has a new short called “Faith” he shot on the new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, ready for its release after a press screening late last month.

But what is surprising are the questions of how an American version of the movie, which spins a semi-supernatural mystery that gets much of its color and humor from its rural Korean setting, would get the tone of the original right without stripping it of everything that made it so winning in the first place.

But looking at the talent in front of camera only tells a small portion of the story: they wouldn’t be anywhere without the people who actually make the movies.

It’s an infectious feeling to walk out of a film and know that you’ve watched the start of what promises to be an enormously exciting career, and the emergence of new voices is one of the things that makes the movies so exciting.

That’s where Joe von Appen and myself step in on this latest episode of Adjust Your Tracking. Most of the podcast is spent discussing Refn’s latest (and, appropriate for his typically divisive work, you’ll find us more negative towards the film then most other Playlisters), where his career can go from here and in the back half of the show we even dig into spoilers and what the film is trying to say.

With critically panned studio mega-million productions making most of their big bucks overseas, American moviegoers are clearly not very interested in what the big screens have to offer these days. The country’s multi-genre cauldron boils intensely in Na Hong-jin‘s “The Wailing” — his third feature after the critically acclaimed noirish treats “The Yellow Sea” and “The Chaser” — which sees chaos descend upon a bucolic village near Gokseong County in Korea.
