It’s been seven years since “The Light Between Oceans” debuted and saw Alicia Vikander act opposite Michael Fassbender. Since then, the duo has married in real life, but they have yet to reconnect on screen. Thankfully, Korean filmmaker Na Hong-Jin is going to fix that with his new film, “Hope.”

For those who love South Korean cinema, Na Hong-jin‘s “The Wailing” was a special treat when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016: a rural police procedural with a touch of the macabre and supernatural. But that was almost seven years ago, so what has Na been up to lately? Well, the director has a new short called “Faith” he shot on the new Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, ready for its release after a press screening late last month.

Given the rave reviews, multiple best-of-2016 appearances, and huge buzz, it’s not a big surprise that Na Hong-Jin‘s “The Wailing” is being eyed for a remake. But what is surprising are the questions of how an American version of the movie, which spins a semi-supernatural mystery that gets much of its color and humor from its rural Korean setting, would get the tone of the original right without stripping it of everything that made it so winning in the first place.

At this year’s Cannes Film Festival, internationally renowned Korean auteur Park Chan-wook dished out “The Handmaiden,” slicing critical opinion down the middle (we loved it), but in a darker, slightly seedier, much more fantastically and no-holds-barred entertaining way, a younger Korean director showed his splendid colors too. The country’s multi-genre cauldron boils intensely in Na Hong-jin‘s “The Wailing” — his third feature after the critically acclaimed noirish treats “The Yellow Sea” and “The Chaser” — which sees chaos descend upon a bucolic village near Gokseong County in Korea.
