Werner Herzog Talks David Lynch & ‘My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done’

As we mentioned last week, Werner Herzog’s last feature film, the bizarre psychological horror, “My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done,” hits DVD on September 14th thanks to Absurda, Industrial Entertainment and First Look Studios.

Starring Michael Shannon, Chloe Sevigny, Willem Dafoe, Michael Pena, Udo Kier, Brad Dourif and Grace Zabriskie, the strange and deadpan picture was once positioned — by the press at least — as a David Lynch project handed off to the German auteur, and considering the Lynch-ian spirit pulsing throughout the picture (including Lynch acting mainstays), one is forgiven if they believed that info to be true.

Exclusive: Werner Herzog Says He’s Working On Non-3D “Big, Epic” Desert Picture & Film Set In A Maximum Security Prison

Werner Herzog’s strange and deadpan 2009 film, “My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done,” didn’t receive the biggest theatrical release last year, but the picture — starring Michael Shannon, Chloe Sevigny, Willem Dafoe, Michael Pena, Udo Kier and Grace Zabriskie (perhaps known best for her memorable appearances with David Lynch, who produced this picture) — will hit DVD on September 14th thanks to Absurda, Industrial Entertainment and First Look Studios.

We had a chance to speak to Herzog this morning and while the director told us all about the film, his collaboration with Lynch on the project, and his upcoming 3D-shot documentary, “Cave Of Forgotten Dreams,” he also told us about some upcoming projects we did not know about.

Hina Abdullah Added To Cast Of ’30 Minutes Or Less,’ Werner Herzog’s ‘My Son, My Son’ Hits DVD On September 14

Hina Abdullah has joined the cast of Ruben Fleisher’s bank-heist comedy “30 Minutes or Less,” presumably she plays the love interest in the film (Jesse Eisenberg’s character hearts her) and the sister of Aziz Ansari’s character.

If you haven’t heard of her, don’t get upset, she’s a newcomer and will be also be seen in the troubled Kenneth Lonergan film “Margaret” starring Anna Paquin and Mark Ruffalo (who incidentally, recently spoke with Collider and insisted that the film should be out soon and is “finally untangling itself from all its legal woes”).

One for the Herzog die-hards out there only….Those who thought they might have had to wait for a DVD release of Werner Herzog’s newest film “My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done” may have some newfound hope of seeing the film in theaters.

In a rare Boston screening we attended this past week, producer and co-writer Herbert Golder revealed that the bizarre film is still attempting to be distributed beyond the limited New York/Los Angeles release.

A slim weekend before the arrival of “Avatar” next week, as only one new film hits theaters in wide release. A drama about a rugby game is a tough sell here in the States, but with heavy starpower and an uplifting sports theme, “Invictus” might pull in a decent sum this weekend. Although most of America would probably rather hit up the more familiar “The Blind Side” again for their sports tearjerker fix.

Herzog’s ‘My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done’ Hits Theaters In Small Release December 11

While we love Werner Herzog in spirit and are pretty much always rooting for him, his narrative track record (especially without Klaus Kinski) can be spotty see — “Invincible” and “Rescue Dawn,” which we didn’t hate, but was a mild rendering of his documentary, “Little Dieter Needs To Fly”.

2009 has not been kind to the filmmaker. While containing some amusingly loony situations and absurdist laughs, “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans” is far from a brilliant picture and a bit of a mess (advanced ironists looking for nothing more might love it though).

Does Werner Herzog ever sleep? With two movies out this year — the trippy “Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans” and the sort-of-based-on-a-true-story freakout “My Son, My Son What Have Ye Done” — and the release of his book, Conquest Of The Useless, a compilation of his diary entries during the troubled making of “Fitzcarraldo,” you would think the guy might at least take a nap.

TIFF ’09 Review: ‘My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done’

Never let it be said that Werner Herzog isn’t ambitious. He’s pulled boats over mountains (“Fitzcarraldo”), and documented his exploration of every kind of environment imaginable (see: the contrast between his documentaries “The White Diamond” and “Encounters at the End of the World,” just for one example). Now, he’s challenged us all again, dropping two bizarre concoctions of comedy and violence during the course of one film festival. Both attempt to defy expectation: one looks to utilize the deadpan humor and quiet intensity of star Nicolas Cage in a way few director’s have, while the other teams the veteran German master with Producer David Lynch, and looks to channel the off-kilter melodrama and psychological-horror of the latter’s most elusive films.

TIFF ’09: Day Three

It’s the same running-ragged story with little chances to write. One can only hope to survive and stay in the game.

Day 3 began with Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s “Micmacs,” picking up exactly where the magical, whimsical world of “Amelie,” left off, but whether you’ll find that predictable and derivative, well, that might just be up to your subjective taste.

Werner Herzog offered a two-fer: the odd, noir comedy, “Bad Lieutenant,” and the existential horror “My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done,” and both weren’t entirely successful, and while we suppose one of them did provide some manic, ironic laughs, this would not prove to be his day or his festival.

Reviews from various films at the Venice Film Festival and the Telluride Film Festival — both currently in progress are….ok, not flying in fast and furious like we expected, but more like trickling in at a moderate pace (maybe it’s the economy and less writers to carpetbag the events).

Variety weighs in on Todd Solodnz’s “Life During Wartime,” and are surprisingly positive after shellacking almost anything in sight lately that hasn’t appeared to be accessible or commercial (“The Road,” Herzog’s “Bad Lieutenant: Port of New Orleans“).

Trailer: Werner Herzog’s ‘My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?’

Late last week we posted first-look pictures of German director Werner Herzog’s lo-fi horror of sorts, called “My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done” premiering at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (in addition, the festival will also feature Herzog’s “Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans,” starring Nic Cage; dude has been prolific).

Now the trailer has arrived and boy this thing is weird. David Lynch produced this picture that stars Michael Shannon, Willem Dafoe, Chloe Sevigny, Udo Kier, Grace Zabriskie and Michael Pena (among others) and it sports the lo-fi digi look of his “Inland Empire,” and also looks like it has some fairly Lynch-ian deadpan humor.

Someone’s been crazy prolific of late.

In addition to “Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans,” German auteur Werner Herzog also has his follow-up picture, a horror of sorts, called “My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done” premiering at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Like its predecessor, the first look at ‘My Son’ has also been released on the eve of its festival premiere thanks to those folks at Collider who have nabbed a ton of good TIFF-related images.

‘The Road’ & Yet Another Werner Herzog Film Added To TIFF ’09 Line-Up

Man, if one was remotely lukewarm about the Toronto International Film Festival before (which is a bit nuts), you’re surely not now. 19 new films have been added to the line-up and man, we’re getting even more excited to attend the festival that we probably won’t be attending (ahh, good times…).

Here’s the highlights for us:
– First and foremost, John Hillcoat’s post-apocalyptic drama, “The Road,” starring Viggo Mortensen in Cormac McCarthy’s bleak, but beloved novel about a father and son traveling a decrepit and dangerous wasteland to survive.

Herzog Talks ‘Bad Lieuntenant’ Says Nic Cage Wouldn’t Sign On Without Him

Is there distribution hope for Werner Herzog’s “Bad Lieutenant” or was there hope all along and we’ve just been too damn impatient?

In February it was reported the the film still had no U.S. distribution (or any at all?) and Herzog had already moved on to shoot the David Lynch-produced lo-fi horror, “My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?”

Call us crazy, but this worried us, however, news now comes from the trades that say ‘Lieutenant’ has a shot at premiering at the Cannes 2009 Film Festival (though whether it plays in competition seems to be doubtful).

‘My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done’ Gets A Poster And Synopsis

A certain air of mystery has thus far surrounded the production of the Werner Herzog-helmed, David Lynch-produced psychological horror film “My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done.” Now that filming has reportedly been completed though, a full synopsis and a poster has finally been unveiled.

It had previously been announced that the film will star, among others, Michael Shannon Willem Dafoe, Chloe Sevigny, Michael Pena and Grace Zabriskie.

The story of ‘My Son’ is based on actual events and is catalysed as police arrive at the scene of a hostage situation in a middle class neighbourhood of San Diego.

Brad Dourif, Michael Pena & Bill Cobbs Join Lynch/Herzog Horror ‘My Son’

The influence of David Lynch over Werner Herzog’s murderous horror film “My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done,” seems to be tangible. Herzog might be directing, but the casting choices seem right out of a Lynch movie (he’s the executive producer of the project).

Not only has Willem Dafoe (“Wild At Heart”) and Lynch regular Grace Zabriskie already joined the cast, but three new actors have been announced including Lynch mainstay Brad Dourif (“Dune,” “Blue Velvet”) and Michael Pena and Bill Cobbs.
