Carey Mulligan Confirms Link To John Madden’s ‘My Fair Lady’ Remake, Says She ‘Would Love To Do It If It Happens’

After playing a game of cat and mouse with the media earlier this year, first being unveiled by Emma Thompson and then denying any involvement, Carey Mulligan has finally confirmed her link to the gestating remake of “My Fair Lady” noting that while she is in talks to star, the project isn’t going to be happening for a while yet.

“It’s not happening this year,” Mulligan told WorstPreviews. “I’ve definitely spoken about it, and I would love to do it if it happens, but it’s just not happening right now.”

“I read the script and the script is incredible.

John Madden Still Directing ‘My Fair Lady,’ Aiming For A 2011 Shoot

The remake of “My Fair Lady” lives on. Correcting his earlier story that director John Madden had left the film due to disagreements over who to cast in the role of Professor Henry Higgins (the role was most recently attached to Hugh Grant, a favorite of screenwriter/actress/friend Emma Thompson), MailOnline writer Baz Bamigboye has learned that Madden is still set to direct but that filming definitely won’t happen until 2011.

As for Hugh Grant, it looks like he’s out as casting is still underway for the roles of Professor Henry Higgins and his student Eliza Doolittle.

Did John Madden Walk Away From ‘My Fair Lady’ Because Of Hugh Grant?

It looks like the long-gestating remake of “My Fair Lady” is going back to the drawing board. Again.

It appears that John Madden, who joined the troubled production in December of last year has quit the film. Rumor has it that disagreements over who to cast in the role of Professor Henry Higgins led him to leave the film that was going to try to get in front of cameras later this year, or in early 2011.

No One Tells Carey Mulligan Anything; Not Sure About ‘My Fair Lady,’ ‘Effie,’ ‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’

Yesterday, we thought we’d finally settled the long-running issue of Carey Mulligan’s appearance in “My Fair Lady,” as the film’s screenwriter Emma Thompson said on the red carpet of “Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang” that “I think Carey is set to play the role,” the role being the film’s lead, Eliza Doolittle. Except, apparently, Ms. Mulligan isn’t aware of this.

Movieline/Collider spoke to the actress yesterday, at a press day for “The Greatest,” and asked about the project, and Mulligan responded with a non-committal “Well, that’s hugely flattering and that would be great.

Ever since John Madden took the reigns of the long-gestating “My Fair Lady” in December, it seems the film has been losing more cast members than adding them. First, Keira Knightley, long attached to take the lead role of Eliza Doolittle, dropped out and then a month later, the hotly tipped Carey Mulligan denied any involvement in the picture. We began to wonder if Madden was just another director on the merry-go-word that has also included Danny Boyle and Stephen Daldry at various stages.

Carey Mulligan Denies ‘My Fair Lady’ Link

Contrary to reports, Carey Mulligan has denied any link to John Madden’s upcoming remake of the classic 1964 musical “My Fair Lady.”

The actress reportedly became the project’s number one target ahead of Gemma Arteton and Emily Blunt after producers turned their attentions to English talent despite links to Scarlett Johansson and Anne Hathaway. However, when recently asked about the rumors, Mulligan set the record straight.

“No,” she responded with evident sadness.

Keira Knightley Drops Out Of ‘My Fair Lady’ Musical Remake

The planned remake of “My Fair Lady” has been in the works for many, many years at this point — Danny Boyle came very close to doing it, and approached Daniel Day Lewis to star, leaving the project when he couldn’t land him. Joe Wright was rumored to be on board, but it turned out that he’d turned the project down, and now “Shakespeare in Love” helmer John Madden is in the director’s chair.

All through this process, Keira Knightley has been loosely attached to play Eliza Doolittle, although she’s never officially signed on.

John Madden Eyes ‘My Fair Lady’

The developmentally challenged remake of “My Fair Lady,” which has proceeded in fits and starts all year, now has new life once again as John Madden has officially thrown his name in the ring as a potential director.

Variety’s report on the gestating film is pretty detail heavy which makes us think that Madden may be the one to finally to get the ball on this rolling. According to the trade magazine, the film is going to more closely follow the original George Bernard Shaw play “Pygmalion” than the 1964 outing with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison, and will hold onto the original songs, 1912 settings and original London locations.

We’ve all been burned by the U.K. press/tabloids before, particularly with the still-in-development “My Fair Lady” project that seems trouble finding a director.

This spring Danny Boyle was rumored to be circling the project, and this fall a supposedly reputable U.K. source (The London Telegraph) made up a story (or got their intel totally wrong) that Joe Wright was getting ready to film the project with Scarlett Johansson and while we fell for it initially, we quickly called shenanigans on the report.

“It’s All A Lie”: Joe Wright Is NOT Directing ‘My Fair Lady’

The great thing about having a U.K. writer on staff is having someone with a keen understanding of how to traverse the murky waters of U.K. journalism, much of it tabloid schlock. Institutions like the Guardian and the Telegraph seem like reputable outlets to American journos, media and bloggers, but homegrown writers know even these guys’ track records aren’t spotless.

Case in point: earlier this week the Telegraph reported that Joe Wright (“Atonement”) had replaced Danny Boyle to direct the remake of “My Fair Lady,” after his next film “Indian Summer” fell apart, and that his usual muse Keira Knightley would play the Cockney-turned-charmer Eliza Doolittle (Boyle left that project on his own accord a few months ago).

Joe Wright To Direct Keira Knightley in ‘My Fair Lady’?

Shortly after his Oscar-winning success with “Slumdog Millionaire,” Danny Boyle was said to be circulating a long-gestating remake of “My Fair Lady,” written by Emma Thompson (“Sense and Sensibility”), and produced by Duncan Kenworthy (“Four Weddings and a Funeral”) and theater impresario Sir Cameron Mackintosh. However, a few months ago, Boyle announced he was off the project, saying “It hasn’t worked out with me in the end, so that’s no for me.”

Flash forward a few months, and The Daily Telegraph is now reporting that “Atonement” helmer Joe Wright will replace Boyle on the project, after his next film “Indian Summer” fell apart last week, and that his usual muse Keira Knightley will play the Cockney-turned-charmer Eliza Doolittle.

Danny Boyle Quashes ‘Bond 23’ Rumors

We should all stop posting anything the U.K. Sun ever “reports” because lord knows 90% of what they publish is complete unsubstantiated rumor rubbish, but like everyone one else, the juicy glint of possibility is sometimes too hard to resist.

We were cynical when we heard the news that Danny Boyle had been offered the next, 23rd installment of the Bond franchise, but we still prayed to Baby Jesus that he wouldn’t be involved just in case.
