Audiences may be led to believe that is the visuals which is the most important of the two. Sound, however, offers a type of mastery to the puppet that is the visual. Our eyes and ears are interconnected when we see a movie. Often, it is the visual we pay the most attention to because it is right in front of us, presumably on a large screen.

Of course, the filmmaker — certainly the world’s most famous director, and a strong contender for America’s greatest — is concerned with the big picture, too. But few since Lubitsch have had such a facility for the beat, the set piece, the gag, the reversal, the sequence that you replay in your head long after you’ve walked out of the theater.

Steven Spielberg’s pet project, “Lincoln” was killed two weeks ago when Paramount pulled the plug on it, right?

Many saw it as proof of Spielberg’s waning power or studio’s fear of greenlighting anything that’s not a immediate blockbuster slamdunk.

But not so fast. EW talked to Spielberg’s PR flack and apparently the previous report is false, the project is still all full steam ahead*. “Lincoln is alive and well and continues in active development,” Marvin Levy, Spielberg’s longtime publicist said.

Ah, candidness is so refreshing. “Babylon A.D.” opens up this weekend and despite a score composed by the RZA and Hans Zimmer, it looks otherwise pretty worthless to anyone with half a brain.

Hell, even the director of the film, Frenchman Mathieu Kassovitz, thinks so (you’ll remember his as the lovable inept bomb maker from Spielberg’s “Munich”), but he’s not taking much of the blame.

“I’m very unhappy with the film.
