Did “RuPaul’s Drag Race” reclaim its Emmy crown in the Reality Competition Category? Like all nominees in the never-ending Primetime Emmy race of 2023, we won’t find out until January 15. In the meantime, the Paramount and MTV juggernaut is back on January 5th for its 16th season, which is the 15th anniversary of the flagship series. A program that has spawned over 14 international spin-offs and turned drag into a global phenomenon.

Given all the mortal wounds, broken bones, bruises, and old aging, there had been a twelve-year gap between “Jackass 3D” and the fourth “Jackass” film. However, the crew of stuntmen pranksters made their glorious return earlier this year alongside new additions to the roster for “Jackass Forever.” Many assumed the introduction of fresh-faced newbies was a sign that a series was eventually going to go forward and it looks like that is indeed the case.

The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, aka the VMAs, were  Sebastian Maniscalco and broadcast from the Prudential Center in gorgeous Newark, NJ on Monday, August 26.  Taylor Swift took Video of the Year, among other honors, for “You Need To Sit Down” while Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus took Song of the Year for “Old Town Road” (Remix).

The broadcast featured performances from Swift, Lil Nas X, Lizzo, Miley Cyrus, Rosalia and Shawn Mendes, among others.

Never underestimate the will of Shari Redstone, chairwoman of National Amusements.  Or perhaps that should be amended to “never underestimate the will of any Redstone.”  Today, after three years of corporate intrigue, CBS and Viacom have grudgingly reunited. The biggest obstacle to the merger, Les Moonves, collapsed under a scandal of his own making.  Redstone’s now 96-year-old father, Sumner, battling the effects of Father Time, couldn’t stop it either.

After 33 seasons, it’s hard to believe MTV’s “The Challenge” has such a low profile from an industry perspective.  Following this year’s well-received “The Challenge: War of the Worlds,” the Viacom network is trying to change that by making a run at the Emmy for Reality-Competition Series.  It’s a tough category to break into, but they’ve got a chance.

The season featured contestants from other reality shows or reality-competition shows from all over the world including “The Bachelor Canada,” “Big Brother,” “Big Brother Celebrity UK,” “Survivor,” “Love Island,” “The Bachelorette,” “American Ninja Warrior” and “The Real World,” among others.

MTV is looking to give the MTV Movie Awards some newfound relevancy in its 26th year.  The ratings for the annual Spring “alternative” awards show have been dismal over the past few years and the network even pre-taped the 2016 event to try and create a better edited product (yeah, that was a mistake for a variety of reasons).  Now, changes are in the works. Not only will the 2017 show be live again, but it will be renamed the “MTV Movie & TV Awards” to include a wider range of content.
