David Lowery is no stranger to taking big swings with his films. Even when he’s done more four-quadrant features, such as “Pete’s Dragon” and “Peter Pan & Wendy,” Lowery has taken risks. But it sounds as if his next film, “Mother Mary,” might be his biggest swing to date.

Speaking on the Last Video Store podcast, before jumping into the format of the pod, David Lowery was asked about “Mother Mary.” And according to the filmmaker, it’s a “weird, weird movie” and he’s not actually sure how it’s all going to turn out.

Well, here we are again. With 2023 finally coming to a close, it’s time to look to next year and the Most Anticipated Films Of 2024 (Strike Affected Edition). It’s been a very weird year with the SAG and WGA strike affecting everything, playing havoc with release date schedules in a similar way that the pandemic did. I talked about this in my write-up for “Peter Pan & Wendy,” the upcoming live-action remake from Disney, but David Lowery is the King of the “one for them, one for me” creative model. Almost like clockwork, the filmmaker will follow up an indie film with a big-budget film before coming back to another indie drama. A couple of years ago, we saw him release “The Green Knight,” which is being followed up by “Peter Pan & Wendy.” And as we could have predicted, after he’s done playing with Disney, he’s going back to his indie playground with a new film from A24 titled “Mother Mary.”

According to A24, David Lowery will write and direct a musical film, titled “Mother Mary.” The film is also set to star none other than Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel.
