The facade of a hostess club is engulfed in flames of mysterious origin, attracting everyone from curious neighbors to squealing children chasing down roaring fire engines to witness the chaos. But such a fire can be traced back to its igniting spark, and “Monster” delicately examines how, like a growing flame, seemingly innocuous falsehoods can spiral into total destruction.

But thankfully, before it really starts in earnest, and we’re on to the third major superhero film of the year, we get some alternative options at the Cannes Film Festival. Or at least the lucky few of us who get to attend do, and the rest of us get to highly anticipate their regular theatrical (or streaming) release.

But sometimes, there are genuine diamonds in the rough and there are some films that beg to be seen and not drowned out by the latest season of “Nailed It!” or a new Melissa McCarthy comedy. In May, that film might very well be “Monster.”

A film that focuses on a group of Rebellion pilots and is expected to feature a multitude of aerial dog fights, the space battle in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was easily one of the highlights of the film, and I’m sure the new film will expand upon it.

Of course, she broke out in a big, big way thanks to the Charlize Theron-starrer “Monster,” but between that film and ‘WW,’ there was 14 years of only directing one or two episodes of TV series. And in a new interview with Vanity Fair, the director discusses those hard times and explains why she’d like to return for an eventual “Wonder Woman 3.”

As mentioned, after the Oscar-winning success of “Monster,” Jenkins was on top of the world.

The story revolves around Steve Harmon (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), a well-mannered, law-abiding Harlem teenager who winds up arrested for his involvement in a robbery and murder at a 7/11.

It’s funny how January is known as a dead time for movies — and it is for mainstream films — but in the realm of independent cinema, the first month of the year is that time when filmmakers are cramming to finish their Sundance-bound pictures.

The mind of a killer, their disturbing motivations, their often perverse behavior and their unknownable, sociopathic thinking is not unlike our obsession with the great white shark: culture is always fixated on apex killers and the more mysterious and impossible to peg, the more fanatical we are about their own preoccupations and psychotic neuroses.
