This weekly column sifts through all of those choices to pluck out the movies most worth your time, no matter how you’re watching.

This week, we’ve got two late-2019 releases that didn’t get their due in the year-end mudslide, plus a sharp bio-documentary, one of the previous decade’s best action flicks, and an undervalued late-period entry from one cinema’s true masters.

But it wouldn’t be complete without our deep dive into the best soundtracks and scores of the 2010s. It’s admittedly somewhat weird and difficult to do. Scores and soundtracks are different beasts; one original musical written for a film that gives it its emotional shape—often the secret MVP of a movie—and the other more of a mixtape, but when well-curated and used next to picture, can be just as deadly and help craft what we know as the visual and aural transcendence that’s known as cinema when it’s at its best.

The character, played by the great Bill Duke, is referring to a league system that treats black players like commodities because it could never beat them on the court. In this way, “High Flying Bird” is a scathing send-up of not only the NBA but all sorts of starry-eyed sports movies.

Miller has brought to the screen profound, enigmatic characters each time. His movies “Capote,” “Money Ball,” and “Foxcatcher” received praise not only for the filmmaker’s direction but the astounding, sometimes surprising, performances of each film’s cast, arguably Channing Tatum and Steve Carell‘s best turns to date, one of Jonah Hill‘s standout dramatic performances and obviously an Oscar for the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.

The abridged story is that Soderbergh’s movie was just days away from starting filming when the studio pulled the plug and suddenly panicked about the picture. Soderbergh’s take on the data-driven baseball drama would’ve featured real-life players, but there was second-guessing from Sony about the kind of film they wanted.

They convinced Kevin Spacey and David Fincher to enter the TV world, they’ve virtually monopolized the stand-up comedy circuit, and they’ve made two deals with Adam Sandler to make a total of eight movies. But this Friday sees probably the biggest A-lister they’ve yet attracted, with David Michôd’s dark satire “War Machine,” starring none other than Brad Pitt.

While he took a detour into television with “The Knick,” the director has two films in the works: “Mosaic,” an experimental project over at HBO (which may not quite resemble a film in the end and could be a kind of a series), and the NASCAR heist comedy, “Logan Lucky.”

But last night at The Nitehawk theaters in Williamsburg, the director, who rarely looks back at his work, was doing just that with a screening of “Haywire” followed by a Q&A afterwards (presented by Soderbergh’s liquor line Singani 63).

We’re not going to recount the long, twisty history of “Moneyball” — we’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, there is a crackerjack book or in depth Peter Biskind-styled Vanity Fair sized story here just waiting to be written — but a year after Steven Soderbergh’s version was canned at the very last minute the Bennett Miller (“Capote”) directed film is finally in front of cameras.

Given it’s a movie about baseball, and is filming in an actual ballpark, it’s no surprise that set photos have leaked at the rate usually reserved for boring tentpoles (zomg, a picture of car that might be Transformer!).

In Steven Soderbergh’s aborted attempt at adapting the non-fiction book “Moneyball,” he was looking to have many of those involved in the narrative depicted by their real-life counterparts. A few re-writes and a new director later (Bennett Miller), it appears they’ve distanced themselves from the pretense of real life, with actors signing on to play the likes of superstar Alex Rodriguez and journeyman Scott Hatteberg. We’re not sure how big a role the finished film has for Oakland A’s manager Art Howe, as he was originally slated to play himself, but they certainly upgraded by casting Philip Seymour Hoffman as the tranquil skipper.

After a year of debacles and false start the baseball drama “Moneyball” is finally shooting and we thought we’d never see the day. And here’s your first look at Brad Pitt as Oakland A’s GM Billy Beane standing next to an unidentified A’s team member in the dugout. We assume that’s not the coach, because Art Howe is a ) white and b) being played by Phillip Seymour Hoffman. There’s also a second look here at Jonah Hill who plays untested Harvard grad and Beane’s assistant Paul DePodesta.

Update: Chris Pratt, who has been killing it on “Parks & Recreation” this season, has joined “Moneyball” in the role of Scott Hatteberg — a first basemen whose career was resurrected by Oakland Athletics assistant G.M Paul DePodesta (Hill) after an elbow injury had left him without an MLB contract and unable to even hold or throw a baseball.

With shooting finally beginning today, almost a year after Steven Soderbergh’s version was halted, literally hours before it was to start filming, “Moneyball” is firming up the final bits of casting.

Television actor Stephen Bishop will play slugger David Justice in Bennett Miller’s forthcoming adaptation of Michael Lewis’ “Moneyball.”

Justice was an outfielder and designated hitter who was recruited by Athletics’ assistant GM Paul DePodesta for a final season in 2002 as an experiment on the effect of age with hitters. His success seemingly argued that hitters retained their abilities. Interestingly, Steven Soderbergh’s earlier iteration of the Lewis adaptation would have seen Justice play himself with comedian Demetri Martin playing DePodesta.

Trick question. How many ups and downs, restarts and resets can one Hollywood project have before it self-implodes? Or wait, how many screenwriters in Tinseltown does it take to pen a sports drama about a winning baseball season the Oakland A’s had in 2003 thanks to a sabermetrics statistics measurement adopted by the team’s general manager Billy Beane and his untested Harvard grad assistant Paul DePodesta?

Yes, we’re talking “Moneyball” once again, a project that has become one of the more paroxysmal and convoluted ones to almost hit the screen in recent years.

As it turns out, sometimes press junkets can be useful for more than rumors about “Alien” prequels and the next “Iron Man” movie. Jeff Wells was at the roundtables for the hotly-tipped Toronto hit “Get Low,” — which is finally set to hit theaters at the end of July– and Robert Duvall gave some info on another project that he’s involved with that, if it comes together, could be incredibly exciting.

The veteran actor is apparently set to appear in “The Hatfields and The McCoys,” a retelling of the legendary 19th century family feud, which has been written by Eric Roth (“Forrest Gump”), and has “Crazy Heart” director Scott Cooper attached to helm at Warner Brothers.

As if the trivia/news surrounding “Moneyball” couldn’t get more fascinating/bizarre (seriously, a Vanity Fair style story on this film’s development would be amazing), now comes word that cinematographer Adam Kimmel has been arrested on charges that he sexually assaulted a child in Connecticut (pictured here on the left of Craig Gillespie and Bennett Miller).

Kimmel’s resume, while brief, is fairly stellar. “Capote,” “Lars & The Real Girl,” “Jesus’ Son,” Spike Jonze’s short “I’m Here” and Mark Romanek’s forthcoming “Never Let Me Go” all bear his credit.

Deadline Hollywood has confirmed what Jonah Hill told The Playlist first, last month at the SXSW Film Festival: the long-delayed baseball sabermetrics film, “Moneyball” will shoot this summer in July.

Frankly, we’re kind of shocked. If we wrote up every little piece of dirt we had heard about the maligned-“Moneyball” project we would have had about five or six stories on the site dealing with the minutia of its problems, but like everything in Hollywood: things ebb, flow, fluctuate and change.

In the very first minutes of “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” we learn a few pivotal facts about our hero, Mikael Blomqvist. A news report informs us that the middle-aged male protagonist is a reporter, called “a beacon of journalistic integrity,” who penned a revealing expose on a top bureaucrat, only to see his sources vanish without explanation when said power-broker’s lawyers came calling. The news report is downbeat, concerning Blomqvist’s impending prison time as an unfortunate occurrence, since he’s also the head of a popular, well-respected publication in the film’s Swedish setting.

Jonah Hill is not only a film fanatic and a movie blog junkie, he has a mild, jocular beef with The Playlist. We won’t bore you too much with the navelgazing, but suffice to say he had some good-natured issues with our coverage of his role in the upcoming baseball film, “Moneyball” which he confirmed to us is a done deal. “I beat all these people for the part, and I was so excited for the role and then I read your site and you were like shitting all over me saying I was going to ruin it and it was now going to be a broad comedy,” he teased good-naturedly.

Yes, in case you thought it was dead in the water, “Moneyball” is still a living, breathing project that Sony exec Amy Pascal is still hoping to bring to the big screen, but perhaps in a hugely revised version that is nowhere near what Steven Soderbergh had in mind when his film was canned literally days before it was set to go in front of cameras.

We’ll try to keep the history concise, so bear with us.

Brad Pitt must get some wicked pleasure out of torturing producers as the actor’s Plan B Entertainment are closing on deal to turn Michael Lewis’ “The Big Short: Inside The Doomsday Machine” in to a film, and a potential starring vehicle for the actor. And by “potential starring vehicle” that could mean anything from “starring Brad Pitt” to “starring-Brad-Pitt-until-he-loses-interest-and-wants-to-do-something-else-at-the-last-minute.”

Does the name Lewis sound familiar? If you recall, he was the writer behind “Moneyball” which was brutally shut down literally hours before filming was supposed to begin last summer.

OK, we doubted new Vulture writer, Claude Brodesser-Akner, last week and evidently we won’t be doing this again.

Us: This morning, one of our trusty sources says, Marc Webb will direct “Spider-Man,” a “deal is definitely being worked out now” (you’ll recall we knew Marc Webb wasn’t getting “Moneyball” earlier this year when everyone else said he was…though it was close at one point).

So we fumbled around trying to find more sources, to double-confirm, etc… and too late.

Alright, you’ve already seen our Most Anticipated Films of 2010 feature our Least Anticipated Films of 2010 feature and now we have the Potentially Decent Escapist Entertainment Films (Or Mildly Interesting Indie Ones) Of 2010.

It should be no surprise to you by now what type of film we generally cherish (non-pandering intelligent cinema), which ones we typically loathe (lowest common denominator chum meant to plop popcorn munchers in seats) and which ones we treat with suspicion until otherwise verified as something being other than slightly above reproach.
