September is here, and the fall film festivals have started —check out our Venice coverage so far, and our Telluride coverage starts tomorrow and TIFF next week. Nevertheless, the days are getting shorter and the temperature a little cooler, so it’s time to look back on 2016’s moviegoing summer.

In most respects, it was a bad one. Most tentpoles disappointed, and unusually, it seemed that most underperformed at the box office (though it’s interesting to note that total box office is up about 3% from last year, thanks to a few monster hits).

After a blockbuster debut in North America last weekend, there wasn’t much doubt that “Captain America: Civil War” would once again ride to the top of the box office. The newcomers didn’t pose much of a threat, and the only question, really, was just how big the second weekend for Marvel‘s latest hit would be.

Well, the numbers have rolled in and ‘Civil War’ added $72.5 million to its domestic bank account, another $84.2 million internationally, bringing its total global haul to date to $940 million.

Not only does the film deal with the anger of a young man (Jack O’Connell) who believes the financial system and Wall Street are corrupt, but it stars George Clooney, an actor and filmmaker who has never shied away from sharing his political beliefs.

That’s why her latest stars George Clooney as Lee Gates, the charismatic, abrasive and very successful host of a financial advice television show. And though the movie has some uneven moments Clooney has the gravitas and the fluid energy and control to guide audiences through its occasionally tricky patches.

The fourth movie from the actor-director (who’s been honing her craft with episodes of “House Of Cards” and “Orange Is The New Black” recently), the film’s the kind of grown-up drama we don’t get enough of in the summer months.

Obviously the biggest event of the summer is The Playlist moving to the shiny new digs in which you’re now seeing us. But seriously, the summer movie months are packed with films both big and small guaranteed to thrill, delight and provoke you, and keep you out of the sunshine, and inside basking in air-conditioned comfort.

The time when big movies were released only in summer has long gone — this year has seen “Deadpool,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice,” and “The Jungle Book” among those that were smashing box office records while the temperatures were still low and the days still short.
