Variety reports that after myriad post-production delays, Netflix won’t complete or release “The Mothership,” a sci-fi movie starring Halle Berry. The film wrapped filming back in 2021, but Netflix won’t finish work on the movie, shelving it permanently.

However, a new horse racing drama from first-time director Clint Bentley has placed the Hollywood journeyman squarely in the spotlight for the first time. The result is a performance some are calling the best of his career.

And while I can’t guarantee everyone’s mileage will be the same, from about five minutes in, from its enthrallingly tense beginning through to its unexpectedly transcendent close, while Kornél Mundruczó and Kata Wéber‘s “Pieces of a Woman” was playing out on the screen in front of me, it was also taking up residence deep inside, spreading and growing like the apple seed that Vanessa Kirby‘s shattered character places tenderly in damp cotton to sprout.

Hmm, that doesn’t quite work. How about this: are you prepared to remain lost in space? Better.

Despite a healthy dose of skepticism leading into the first season of Netflix‘s “Lost in Space,” the show won over a fair amount of its doubters with some excellent performances (Molly Parker!) and some A+ special effects.

It was a fitting closing image for an excellent chapter in the book of TV history, setting the stage for what was surely to be a fantastic final season of an unprecedented series.

It’s an experiential arty indie film about the blurring of the boundaries between art and life and it pushes its experimentation and pretentious right to the edge of exasperation. But there’s also a thrilling passion in this kind of whimsical radicalism that teeters on going off the rails, but anxiously, and electrically stays on course.

Actor/writer/director extraordinaire, Decker has been weaving in and out of the independent film-scape for years, with films like “Flames” and “Thou Wast Mild And Lovely.” Her projects are vibrant, full of imagination and color. You just knew that they only produce quality content, and everything they release is must-see television. Well, those days are long gone. With a new TV series released every week, it seems, there’s just so much mediocre content that you can’t know for sure what to expect. That’s the feeling I get when I watch the new trailer for “Lost in Space.”

The trailer looks fine.

A teenage girl, the Madeline in question, sashays her way into her family’s dining room where her mother patiently watches as she lays down on a credenza pretending to be a cat. Her mother indulges this behavior by going over and rubbing her head and stomach as she purrs.

The abyss and darkness of unknowing can be a heavy shroud to shoulder. Throughout his career, documentary filmmaker Errol Morris have revelled in throwing light on strange stories or investigating figures who have made curious chapters in history. However, “Wormwood” marks something new for the director, where his pursuit of the story is the story.

While the director is best known for efforts like “Gates Of Heaven,” “The Fog Of War,” and “A Brief History Of Time,” his latest effort “Wormwood” probably falls more in line with his docu-drama classic, “The Thin Blue Line.” And Netflix has given the legendary filmmaker six episodes to unfold this fascinating story.

Competition is stiff: Andy Muschietti’s “It” and Mike Flanagan’s “Gerald’s Game,” respectively released in theaters and on Netflix in September, both successfully translate King’s work from page to screen, no small feat being as consensus qualifies their source materials as “unfilmable.” (Grant that Nikolaj Arcel’s attempt at turning “The Dark Tower” into cinema failed spectacularly, but grant also that perhaps he had a tougher assignment.)

Muschietti’s aesthetic sense and broadcasted scares make “It” feel like a spooky carnival ride.
