‘The Dark Knight,’ ‘Wall-E’ & ‘Juno’ The Big Movie-Related Grammy Winners

The Grammy Awards— that mostly inessential and ineffectual music awards ceremony and show — were given out tonight and movie fans will want to take note of the three film-related categories.

Perhaps to right the wrong of the Academy Awards snub, Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard’s “The Dark Knight” score won Best Soundtrack Score. Peter Gabriel’s “Down To Earth” song from “Wall-E,” bested both Amy Adams, John C. Reilly, and John Mayer for the Best Song award and the twee mix of Moldy Peaches/Kimya Dawson songs from “Juno” took the Best Compilation Soundtrack prize.

The Moldy Peaches Pay Off Massive Credit Card Debt With Tweaked Juno Song For Atlantis Resorts

I mean, that must be why, right? Not that the Moldy Peaches were the most punk-rock band in the world, but they were relatively subversive with their inappropriate and amusing bathroom humor and songs about crack and whatnot, right?

They appeared on “The View,” and then mocked it with typical too-cool-for-school irreverance, played off every commercial post-“Juno” experience as a chore, but how are they supposed to explain this ad for Atlantis Resorts that uses the pregnant-teen comedy track, “Everyone But You,” with grossly tweaked lyrics to reflect the sunny, fun time you’re going to have laying out in the sun and drinking margs until your lobster red?

Short Cuts: Moldy Peaches Hate Babba Wabba, Weinsteins Rival Criterion, Wale Loves The Show About Nothing

Apparently during the Barbara Walters Academy Awards special right before the Oscars last Sunday, Babba Wabba told guest Ellen Page that she didn’t “get” the Moldy Peaches. Well, Peaches’ Adam Green responded to Walters calling her a smelly old claptrap (sort of). “I don’t think anyone’s taking Barbara’s opinion too seriously,” he said adding that the fact that Walters sang along with Page is evidence that every senile Grandmother on Planet Earth loves the band. “You couldn’t surprise me now,” “If Michael Jordan turned out to be the biggest Moldy Peaches fan, I’d be, like, ‘Join the f—ing club.’” [EW]

Santa Barbara Middle School Teen Press insult the shit out of “Juno” director Jason Reitman, and his “directorial skills,” daring to ask how he has the time to direct a film and then call his father – noted ’80s comedy director Ivan Reitman – and ask where to place the camera. Man, comedy cold. Kids say the darndest things.

According to Spoutblog, many are suggesting the clip was actually made by Reitman himself (“the fact that he posted the video on both his Myspace and YouTube pages only makes it clear that he’s probably responsible for the thing showing up on the net at all”).

Moldy Peaches Perform On ‘The View;’ Juno Soundtrack Moves Up To #2 On Billboard Charts

The little indie-movie that could, “Juno” got nominated for four Oscars (including Best Picture, Actress, Director and Screenplay), the Moldy Peaches – who originally penned what has become the film’s de facto theme (which they made a video for) – awkwardly performed “Anyone Else But You,” to million of housewives on the television show “The View,” and the “Juno” soundtrack sold a very respectable 57,000 and change copies of and moved up to number two on the Billboard charts only behind Alicia Keys.

Juno Cast Do Video For Moldy Peaches’ ‘Anyone Else But You’

Ok, it’s not a video per se, but that final scene in “Juno,” where Michael Cera and Ellen Page sweetly sing the Moldy Peaches’ “Anyone Else But You” to each other? Well, the song has become such a phenomeneon, that Fox Searchlight has submitted it as a video to MTV.

Shit is really blowing up. It’s basically comepletely revived the Peaches’ and Kimya Dawson’s career – She and her Peaches partner Adam Green are going to appear on “The View” for Christ’s sake – and the album has moved up the SoundScan album charts to #3, just under a little band called Radiohead.

Everyone loves “Juno.” The soundtrack was on the top of the digital salesfigures just last week.

Correction: everyone but fairweather music critics who routinely ignore dozens of films each year, but have dug their head out of the sand to feel some self-important sense of ownership over the film because it dares to mention rock bands like the Melvins, the Stooges and Sonic Youth and has the gall to have tenuous and meaningless rock connections that have gotten their panties in a twist (like this fucking jackass).

‘Juno’ Actors’ ITunes Playlists Not-So-Subtle Application For Pitchfork Gig

That Ellen Page is one hip, spunky kid with pretty decent taste. Not only did she recommend the Moldy Peaches to director Jason Reitman who then made their and Kimya Dawson’s music integral to the film “Juno,” she’s got pretty good musical ear that might make the dorks over at Pitchfork want to date her something fierce.

Thanks to our buddy Arye, we were hipped to her ITunes playlist that is pretty great and much better than the actual Juno soundtrack itself (then again, she didn’t have to clear licensing for anything and just picked what was available in ITunes).

Juno Soundtrack Tops Digital Sales Charts

“Juno” is having a hell of a month. The film is already poised to break indie-film records (it’s already snapped up $52 million in total – it was made for a modest $2.5 mil) and now word comes that the film has reached number one on SoundScan’s Digital Album sales chart.

According to Hits Daily Double, if the disc were physically available (see below), it would be in at #9 on normal SoundScan with 40-45k.”

As we’ve mentioned nearly ad nauseum, the soundtrack, which comes out physically on January 15, features many songs from the Moldy Peaches, ex-Peaches singer Kimya Dawson and her side-project Antsy Pants.

Clever, Wisecracking ‘Juno’ A Winner

So, is “Juno” this year’s “Little Miss Sunshine”? I.E., is it the little indie film that could that will transcend it’s indie-comedy genre and make it to the big Oscar show like ‘Sunshine’ did two years prior?

That’s a larger question for later. Directed by Jason Reitman (“Thank You For Not Smoking”) and hot screenwriter du jour Diablo Cody (see the various stories in EW and NYTimes for fawning praise plus the tattoo ‘I’m now single’ story), the teenage comedy “Juno” has high hopes and expectations now foisted upon it.

“Juno” opens up this weekend in limited release (it actually opened on Wednesday).

We’ve gone on about this movie and soundtrack many times (we need to not be lazy and post our review, it’s great), but to recap: “Juno” is comedy about a teenage girl (‘X-Men 3”s Ellen Page) who gets pregnant by her bff (played by Michael Cera) and finds her unborn child a “perfect” set of parents: an affluent suburban couple, (Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner), longing to adopt.

Juno Soundtrack Arriving Digitally December 11 – Tracklist Revealed

Remember the days when there was one release date for albums (that is unless you counted the incorrect British release date) ? Now in our futuristic internetz world, we have two release dates – the digital one and the physical one (remember the Compact Disc? Bueller?)

So with that in mind, the “Juno” soundtrack is coming out December 11 digitally and January 15 physically on Rhino. We’ve already reported all the music within “Juno” which includes tracks largely based around songs by the Mouldy Peaches/Kimya Dawson plus songs from the Kinks, the Velvet Underground, Buddy Holly, Cat Power, Hole, Belle & Sebastian, Sonic Youth and more.

OK, someone gave Jason Reitman (“Thank You For Smoking,” son of comedy director Ivan Reitman) just a little bit of extra dough for soundtrack clearances for his upcoming new dark comedy, “Juno,” which recently debuted to strong reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival (the film won the People’s Choice runner-up prize at TIFF – Eastern Promises took the top honors)

And so, attention Wes Anderson, Zach Braff, Sofia Coppola and filmmakers with tastefully chosen “hipster” soundtracks (in Braff’s case, emo-ly chosen nu-ish indie rock soundtracks to accompany your cranberry juice order), Jason Reitman might be gunning for you.
