Featuring one of the more eye-rolling puns in recent memory, Liz Marshall’s clean-meat documentary “Meat the Future’‘ plays out both as a swift introduction to the growing industry of cultivated meat and a feature-length advertisement for Upside Foods (formerly Memphis Meats) and its founder/CEO Dr. Uma Valeti. Despite such a compelling subject, the film is ultimately more interested in championing Valeti’s start-up then turning a critical eye on the practicalities, or lack thereof, of clean-meat production.

When you think of electronic artist Moby, the name probably conjures his days as an electronica DJ, a big pop star singing along the likes of Gwen Stefani in the late 90s with his ubiquitous 1999 album Play, and his arguably push animal rights activism and veganism, all of which are founded in sound ideology, but often came across in a way that annoyed mainstream audiences (he recently did it all over again, claiming there would be no pandemics if the entire globe were vegan, which sorry, simply isn’t true).

From what we can tell you, the cast signed on knowing very little about the project, but one thing we can say is that while it does boast a lot of music talent, it is not a music-centered film. “ITW Pathway” boasts a huge cast, including Terrence Howard, Temple Grandin, Rufus Wainwright, Famke Janssen, Will Shortz, Moby, Kent Cullers, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, Jorgen Leth, Dave Matthews, Alan Cumming, Rosie Perez, Aimee Mullins, Bob Mankoff and Will Oldham with original music by Yoko Ono.

The Rolling Stones don’t come cheap, and we wonder how much of the film’s budget was spent on securing two of their biggest songs, “Sympathy For The Devil” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” Musician and vegan Moby gets a couple of cuts with “Honey” and “Body Rock” making appearances, while Outkast and 2Pac keep things street level with their respective hits “The Way You Move” and “California Love.” Some nice oldies tunes by Patsy Cline, Louis Prima and Tito Puente also appear while the likes of George Thorogood, Hall & Oates and Tears For Fears are also in the mix.
