2008 is obviously still on the brain and at will be at least for the next week if not longer. Here’s ten films we thought were grossly underrated. We were going to title this the 10 Most Underrated Films of 2008, but someone would have surely balked, only because we haven’t posted our top 20 list yet. These were definitely under-appreciated in our book though.

“In Bruges“
Colin Farell and Brendan Gleeson starred as contract killers sent to the medieval Belgian city of Bruges after a botched hit at the behest of their loose cannon boss Ralph Fiennes.

Remember the “Catcher In The Rye” and oedipal-esque Scottish indie film “Hallem Foe,” renamed “Mister Foe” for the U.S. starring Jamie Bell (of “Billy Elliot” fame) , Claire Forlani and Sophie Myles? It’s been pushed back this spring/summer more times than a hopeless loser in high school against a locker, but it’s finally coming out (unless they push the release date again) September 5th. Which means we finally have a locked in release date for the soundtrack (unless…) which features Franz Ferdinand, Psapp, Juana Molina, Clinic, Junior Boys and Orange Juice (yes, the soundtrack is completely curated by Domino Records, a Scottish label with many a Scottish band on its roster)

Due September 9 physically and September 2 digitally, the soundtrack disc also features Hood, Movietone, Sons & Daughters and that band Cinema we hate (cause we had a band post-college called Cinema and then we realized they had jacked our name first).

Finally, we have realized we don’t have to carry the entire proverbial load when it comes to entertainment. For years we’ve innovatively pinched television programs like, “The Office,” “Big Brother” and countless game shows (“Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”, for one) from the United Kingdom, so why not do the same for a film?

As such, we are treated with a re-packaged version of “Hallam Foe” (2007) now entitled, “Mister Foe” that stars Jamie Bell (of “Billy Elliot” fame) in the lead role and seems to emphasize the proto-typically indie-film charming outsider with the troubled past who seeks love despite his eccentricities (shade of a Scottish “Catcher In The Rye”).
