We’re not sure how many film fans out there actually care, but this weekend marks the annual Super Bowl weekend, where moviegoers skip the multiplex on Sunday and stay inside to watch the two best NFL teams duke it out for world supremacy. And due to this massive television event, the weekend box office during this time is usually much weaker. However, 2019’s Super Bowl weekend is the weakest in almost 20 years.

Last week, we knew that this weekend was going to be small, in relation to the massive weekend’s we’ve had so far this year.

We’re about ready to pack up from our snowy trip to the 2019 Sundance Film Festival which means we’re already beginning to feel the post-festival blues, especially as we’re thrust back into an infuriatingly dull Oscars season conversation (mention “Green Book” or “Bohemian Rhapsody” again and this writer may burst into hives). What’s worse is that after the excitement of the festival that produced a number of stellar films, we’re forced to face the wasteland that is early-2019 theatrical releases.

The gritty thriller put director Gerardo Naranjo on the map – he’s since directed episodes of “The Bridge,” “Narcos,” and “Fear The Walking Dead,” and has “Viena and the Fantomes” starring Dakota Fanning in the can – and also launched the career of Stephanie Sigman (who appeared in “The Bridge” , “Narcos,” and was a Bond girl in “Spectre“).
