“The Place Beyond The Pines” director Derek Cianfrance returns to theaters next year with his first film since 2016: the true-crime pic “Roofman.” And THR reports that Cianfrance has the film’s lead cast lined up now, too.  Channing Tatum headlines in the movie’s title role, while Kirsten Dunst and Peter Dinklage co-star.

But what’s “Roofman” about?  Based on a true story, Tatum stars as a former Army Ranger and struggling dad who resorts to robbing McDonald’s restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs (hence the film’s title).   But after getting arrested, he escapes from prison and starts a new life hiding out in a toy story, falling in love with a single mom and two daughters.  His chance at redemption can’t last, however, as it all hinges on one final robbery…

Along with directing, Cianfrance co-writes the script for “Roofman” with Kirt Gunn.

Another week, another film from the past getting pulled off the shelf, dusted off, and repurposed for a streaming service. Last week, Miramax decided to develop a new TV series with the BBC based on the film, “The English Patient.” And this week, Miramax is back, but with a TV adaptation of Robert Altman’s ‘90s fashion satire, “Prêt-à-Porter.”

According to Deadline, Miramax is teaming with Paramount+ for a series inspired by Robert Altman’s 1994 ensemble film, “Prêt-à-Porter.” (Which is also known as “Ready to Wear (Prêt-à-Porter)” to American audiences.) The film features an all-star cast that includes folks such as Sophia Loren, Kim Basinger, Lauren Bacall, Julia Roberts, Tim Robbins, Forest Whitaker, and Tracey Ullman.

According to Deadline, Ritchie has signed on to write and direct a new limited series inspired by his most recent film, “The Gentlemen.” While the exact details of the series are still unknown, the film follows the story of an American marijuana kingpin in London that was attempting to leave the business, which led to a mad dash by various other criminals to take over the profitable sales of the drug in his absence.

A film we called one of the best of 2008, the story revolves around “a doctor who, after believing his wife has been murdered years before (and in fact after being named as a suspect in the case), begins getting mysterious messages suggesting she may still be alive.” It was definitely a film that had a lot of people telling their friends to go see it, while doing their best not to reveal any of the story’s twists, and not surprisingly, the remake rights were acquired by Focus Features and Miramax after the film’s strong box office performance.

That said, studios and marketing teams usually go the distance and bring out the big guns at the convention and this year is no different. Following the excellent Marvel one sheets for “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “Thor,” Miramax have unveiled a very nice teaser poster for the upcoming Guillermo Del Toro written and produced horror film “Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark.”

Cribbing from the ComicCon site, the film is “about a little girl (Bailee Madison) who is sent to live with her father (Guy Pearce) and his girlfriend (Katie Holmes) in the old mansion they are renovating, only to unwittingly unleash malevolent creatures bent on destroying all of them.” The film is a remake of the 1973 TV movie of the same, but Del Toro’s vision will most likely be a bit darker.
