‘Wednesday’: Netflix Officially Announces Tim Burton’s Coming-Of-Age ‘Addams Famly’ Spinoff Series

Last fall, it was reported that Netflix was going to team up with Tim Burton on a live-action series based on “The Addams Family.” At the time, all that was known is that the series would likely be told from the perspective of teen Wednesday Addams. Well, Netflix made it official today and shared all the details about Burton’s first foray into streaming series.

According to Netflix, Burton is set to direct and executive produce an eight-episode ‘Addams Famly’ spinoff series titled “Wednesday.” The series is indeed told from the POV of the title character, as the show is described as a “coming-of-age comedy.” “Wednesday” is set to be showrun by the duo of Al Gough and Miles Millar, who are probably best known for another coming-of-age spinoff of a classic franchise, “Smallville.” But we’re going to guess that “Wednesday” is a bit darker than that “Superman” origin story.

‘The Addams Family’: Tim Burton Teaming With ‘Smallville’ Creators For New Live-Action Series

If you were to ask an average film or TV fan who should be the director to bring back a live-action series remake of “The Addams Family,” you’d likely hear the name Tim Burton from just about everyone. Burton is a filmmaker that not only has been hugely influenced by “The Addams Family,” but his projects feel like they could very well exist in the same universe with Gomez and Morticia.

It seems like Sam Worthington misses shooting at CGI aliens. The Australian actor, and star of “Avatar” and “Terminator: Salvation,” has started to move away from sci-fi with roles in the upcoming dramas “Last Night,” “The Debt” and “The Fields,” but most of the films that he’s attached to in the future are returns to the big-budget tentpole world, with the likes of “Dan Dare” and “Dracula: Year Zero” on his slate. And now the star is taking on another hero of pulp fiction.

Sam Raimi Leads New Television Effort, Alfred Gough And Miles Millar To Scribe Michael Bay’s ‘I Am Number Four,’ Amber Heard In ‘Zombieland’

Sam Raimi has teamed up with Joshua Donen’s Stars Road Entertainment in a two-year, first-look deal with Sony Pictures TV. CBS’s Robert Zotnowski is spearheading the company’s TV efforts. Raimi’s past TV efforts include “Xena: Warrior Princess,” “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys” and “Legend Of The Seeker.” [THR]

“Smallville” producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar will scribe an adaptation of James Frey and Jobie Hughes’ novel, “I Am Number Four” which already has Michael Bay on board as a producer and possible director.
